2006 DNR Conservation License Plate Design Contest

I think it all came down to one thing----$$$$

The DNR probably came to the conclusion that the original plate design wouldn't be a big seller, so they made the right call and changed it.

I'll pass on the Bass, and stick with the loon. The change is a step in the right direction by listening to the DNR, but who made up the voting public in this? If that is how the majority of voters see fishing in a plate contest, we have a long row to hoe for getting better state funding allocated for our lakes that actually deals with fishing and not solely with recreational boaters.

The next plate contest will probably show a guy hugging a tree, and we'll get to vote on the type of tree!

Gotta shake your head at the voters (as well as the contest organizers). At least the habitat stamp contests have judges from the art and nature fields. Although, the ability to count pheasants in a ditch, does not make you good judge of color and eye-flow; that system would be an improvement over what they used here. Can we send out a questionaire to all who voted, regarding their fish knowledge, art knowledge, personal backgrounds, and ties to Minnesota heritage?

...Then post the answers on FM for a good laugh.

$$$$ probably plays a part but do you think the bass will bring in anymore cash flow.......I just don't see us as a bass state and don't see it being a big seller.....walleye on the rocks was a good looking plate and I like the idea of having an icefishing rendition that would be cool!!!

let's look at it this way...

if we lived in another state...

TX - Largemouth Bass

AK - Trout

AL - Catfish

LA - Crawdad

....

....

MN - WALLEYE...it makes sense, and the fish should be a clear EXACT version of what a walleye looks like - is it that hard??!? what are the politics here...i don't get it??!?

In MN, most anglers don't even recognize a largemouth as a fish. Personally, i think they're kinda fun to catch, but i don't fish for them on purpose.

i would'nt mind a Musky or Snot Rocket, but a BASS...come on, something stinks here??!

What do you guys think? Sorry its so small if you go back to like the second page of this thread you can click on it and make it bigger....not sure why this one doesn't allow that??? Some of the plate on the left side got cut off when I was scanning it also.

We all want a walleye....sorry, we won't get it.

Mistakes were made by the State at square one:

1) Not hiring an artist or having a contest that attracts top-notch artists.

2) Not having better judges. Whether its because urbanization , immigration, or whatever...the general public isn't capable of this (too many think eagles are big, white-headed blackbirds).

As an artist myself, I was annoyed when I read and threw the contest rules, and ticked though not surprised when I saw the end result.

With a fraction of the money the State wasted on this, they could have made a top-notch artist a happy person and had a professional looking plate. Nobody wants to pay for art. Its fun, so someone will do it for nothing, right? The artists I worked with, who did "Return of the Jedi" posters for Coke, and "Henry the Eighth-feasting" portraits for Anheiser-Busch, always said..."I don't enter coloring contests!"

I think they got more than they paid for! The State should be embarrased and have their noses rubbed in it. Unfortunatley, habitat, taxpayers, Mr. Melquist, and other Minnesotans suffer for their bungles.

That part is all water under the bridge now. What to do with the mutant fish?

Should they tell Mr. Melquist that he isn't the winner after he won fair and square half a year ago?...How about change the fish AND the background so the winner is a totally knew piece of art, basically commission him to do an underwater walleye? The good news is we lost the mutant fish...the bad news, we're getting a Largemouth.

I feel for Mr. Melquist, probably a good guy. I bet he is great company in a boat. Might have some rough talent. He was just inspired and wanted a feather in his cap, like every other novice that entered. How could he know what he was getting into...hanging onto a state made godzilla by the tail?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
