Well BD110 and myself got his camper all set up at Fon Du Lac Campground site #2 for those who want to stop by. Second camper to left of landing. Living large this year! grin.gif
I will be up there until next Fri afternoon. Fishing will be great as usual Im sure. Channel 7 on 2 way.
Water seems a bit low and slow so be careful up above by 23. Rock piles and sand bars are still covered but just barely but that can change with rain or a opened dam wich always happens on opener for some reason.
Jig and minnow will be the ticket as well as lindy rigs or spinners.
Make sure you have a good anchor and motor in top shape if you venture up by 23. Lots of bumper boats last year with anchors letting loose and motors not starting.
Good Luck to all and stop by for a smoothy if your up my way. Please practice CPR!

I don't think I will play bumper boats on Saturday or Sunday but I am off Monday and Tuesday and might come up there. I'm going to stay down by Spirit Island and keep low.

Musky Hunter it may not thin out too much due to the 23 bridge opening on Wed. Lots of people I talked to are staying a full week or more.
I hope to see ya some time though. Stop by the camper. Spot #2.

Posted

I'll be down below on opener as well. I'd love to fish with you Northlander, maybe by Monday I'll be up by the bridge, just to let the crowd thin out. But by then you'll probalby have given all the 'eyes toothaches and I won't catch anything!

Posted

Good luck all... Northlander I'm off all of next week and planning on pre-fishing for the grand slam. Maybe we could hook up. Have you heard from Tom on how many teams signed up so far?

Northlander:
I'll do my best to stop by. Hold a spot open for me! As soon as it opens above pressure will move up to the dam. I still think the 36" wallhanger is going to come from down below.

Well Folks,
Stopped down to the campgrounds with Cheffrey to check on Northlander and Pout to see how things were going. They seemed to be right at home and living large. I hope everyone has a great time this weekend. I hope to meet a few others when I finally make it down on Tuesday to do some fishing. Good luck all and be safe,
Thomas (BD110)

Just wanted to post a quick report for the river yesterday. I had 2 other guys and a kid with me and we fished from 7:00 till around 2:30. We caught 134 walleyes with nothing over 22". There were guys who were doing a lot better then we did and were able to find some bigger fish. It was nice in the morning the the lake wind kicked in and then the boats jammed up the river. Best part of the day was watching the kid land 8 walleyes befre his dad caught one. Lots of active fish down there was nice to get out.

Load what size were the Lk Superior eyes and how big. There were 4 of us fishing and we always have a friendly competetion. So we keep track of our walleyes landed to see who wins. Thats how we know the totals at the end of the day. The walleyes are just stacked from Boy Scout up to the bridge. For awhile right away in the morning it was a walleye everytime your jig hit bottom. I heard Northlander on the talkie, he was hammering them even better the way it sounded. My dad beat us again this year for the 3rd straight year, he had 48 eyes by himself. I'm curious to find out how people did else where on the river. Would be nice to find some bigger ones.

Outdoor ran sounds like you found the hole The way I figured it you were catching 27 per hour and people were doing even better than that. Gotta find that place. We went out of Garfield and what a surprise it was busy but the wait was only 10 Min. Everybody had their stuff together. Boat in the water move to the docks and the next guy pulled right in. Hit the big lake for awhile then came in and fished a few of the sides of the slips 10-12ft of water did catch as many a O>R> but got some nice ones even picked up a couple of nice northerns. Northlander would have a good day for MSSL. i chinook 2 bonus eyes two northerns 1 perch I could be sol ucky come monday

Were the eyes bitting all day long sporadiclly or was it mainly in the early morn and the evening? I was just wondering cause I will be up there on tues. with a buddy fishing for some eyes on the st. louis for the first time. I was just going to fish for some salmon and lakers, but since its midweek and I have always wanted to try the river in the spring for eyes, I might try that instead.

Is it just pretty much straight foward shallow river fishing, or is there any tips anyone can give me?

Posted

It looked to me like a slightly below average opener. Water conditions are down, the flow is certainly less than I would like to see. The reports I got were early and late, I found mid day fishing to be a little slow. Jig and minnow the ticket. One group did well using whisler jigs. Fish are spreading out. With this rain maybe the water will come up some, I think that might really help to turn on fish. Water temp 51-53 degrees.

Well stopped back home for a shower, lunch with the wife and walk the dog.
Fishing is still very good. Slow and low river so current is key along with rock. Early bite and late bite shallow and mid day in whatever deeper current you can find. We got board minnow jigging so we hit the plastics. Fish didnt care and were hammering the power shiners and Northland mimic minnows. Anything plastic that looked like a minnow was working well. Its nice to not have to get your hands wet with minnows on days like today. Ring worms also worked a bit.
Biggest fish was 26" with a bunch between 20 and 23". No pigs yet. Lots of nice fish being taken in walleye alley and bong area.
Total so far between just me and Poutslayer is at 163. Slow by our river standards. Late opener to blame with fish all the way to Alouis Bay.
Tomorrow is run and gun day and I will be all over the river. Channel 7 will be on but was shut down due to not being able to talk and fish at the same time. It just got too crazy between that and the cell. I apologize to those who may have tried but you all know how it is.
Well back to it in a few hours. See ya all on the river.
Load its going to be crazy up above wed!

Starfish. Theres quite a bit of places to try from shore. Theres the Arrowhead pier, Barkers island, Boyscout. Theres some fishing piers down by the 23 bridge that you could try. Just stop into a local bait store and they'll point you to the right spot. Or if your lucky maybe Northlander will help you out if he checks in before this weekend. He would know better then I would and he'll have a report. Good luck

Another great day on the River Tuesday. I was able to get lessons from MT Creel He was putting on a pretty good show grin.gif. Another late night after stopping back to check on Northlander. There is nothing like a nice camp fire to wind down the night.
Take care, Thomas (BD110)

I'm headed out tonight, I'll give out a report in the AM. Probably try about Walleye Alley and see how things go. I believe today is when you can fish above 23...to many people for me. Tight lines!

Posted

Went up by marker 83 and made some passes from 6:00-7:30pm. Rained most of the evening.
Current was a bit stronger than it was Sunday. I'm assuming that is because of all the rain we have had this week.
3 of us in the boat and landed maybe 7-9 eyes. Lots of Rock Bass biting! Never have I landed a Rocket before in the river.

Lots of boat came screaming past us from up above.

How was the fishing up there? How do you fish it up there above 23........anchor and just drift jigs?

Posted

Thanks for the lesson on the river BD110!
We went out below the 23 and caught a few - averaging about 18". Both jigging and rigging crawlers.

B2

Thanks again BD110!

Well Im back home for a few days . Grand Slam tourney tomorrow. Fishing is still real good above by the 23 bridge as well as spots below. More nice fish being taken. The bigger fish still have some spawning to do so some are still up high. Males still milking and most females are all but totally done but a few still carrying some weight.
Current is fast as usual. Way different than the first few days of the season.
Get out of the current and jig the edges and shallows. Quicker shallow areas are best now. Get shallow early and late and find current.
Lots of 3/8 oz jigs and at times 1/2 are needed. Plastics in current are good especially bigger power shiners. Brighter the jig the better but gold id going good too.
BDR came up and once he got the hang of the fast water he slottered them. Biggest was a 27" beauty. Nice job Brian! Post the pics on this posting ok?
Lots of 19-22" fish up above. It will be crazy up there this weekend so if you dont have a good heavy anchor or cant stand crowds its not the place for you.
Good luck and hope for good weather this weekend! grin.gif

Hey Xplorer. The campground is called Vine's campground. There is no phone number in the phone book, so I would imagine you would have to call his body shop, which is in the phone book.

It's kind of sad. The two lakes I loved the most in this state are Mille Lacs and Burntside.  And I think we broke them both!  😕
    • JerkinLips
Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.
    • SkunkedAgain
Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.
    • Wanderer
Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.
