..........There are Silva, Cuddy, Hunter posts on this page criticizing their play, but how dare you say anything bad about Joe.................

I can't speak for the others, but I'm guessing Silva, Cuddy and Hunter will also be off limits for bashing, just as soon as they lead the league in a major hitting or pitching stat for 130 games.

Yeah with that logic we might as well start bashing Santana for only getting 11 more strikeouts tonight!!!! At least Santana was able to pull us out of our little funk and get us on the right track with the Kitties and Sox both losing.

Since the post has calmed down a bit, I'll explain a little more. The guy is the 1st man picked in a draft. We all Know he wasn't the best player to draft, but the most signable. Wood was the pick, but never did I think Mauer was the wrong pick. With being the 1st pick in a draft, you have higher expectations. In the last 2-3 weeks, he hasn't performed to where he should. With being a home town boy, I would think he is held to a higher standard than anybody else. Can you imagine what the cubbies fans think of Prior right now? They are very disapointed, as with I in Joe. The guys RBI numbers is my main concern. The first 2 months of the season his RBI # were brutal, this is with stewart and castillo with an on base % near 400. Plus the fact recently he plays 2 out of 3 games. I love the guy's stick. He's a throw back hitter, but being a #1 pick hitting in the 3 spot, wild card on the line, 23 years old and being tired, step it up. To the guys that ripped my post, it wasn't one of hating Joe Mauer or a unknowledgeable person, but rather a higher expectation of the first pick in the draft. DONE.

I wouldn't have accused you of being unknowledgable but maybe unrealistic.

For catchers he is 1st in 6 different offensive categories. 2nd in one category, 3rd in 4 categories, and 4th in at bats. He has a .995 feilding percentage and only one catcher in the majors has fewer stolen bases against him that has played the same or more games that he has behind the plate.

I guess my last question is....What do you want out of a guy? Local boy or not. He has held up his end of the bargain for a # 1 draft choice.

Fishyguy, for the most part your right. He has lived up to expectations, except the last few weeks. That's why I raised the issue. I guess what set me off was the passed ball in the 9th against KC, the game we lost 4-3. Avanced the runner to third, infield up and bloop to score him. He's a better catcher than that.

Every player has an error atleast once throughout the season, every player has a slump during the season regardless if he was a #1 pick or a #500 pick.

What you seem to expect from him is absolute perfection and it just isn't going to happen. If you expect all top tier players to never have a slump or never commit an error then you are going to have alot to complain about.

Can you wish he would never committed an error, or wish he went 2-4 at the plate every game? Yes, you can, but it will never ever happen, no player will ever do that so just try to be more realistic with what you expect out of a baseball player.

Name one first round draft pick that has remotely done what Mauer has at 23 years of age.......Don't bother it has not happened.......

Kerry Wood.....LOL.... grin.gif

MJG--Tell me you're kidding. If you have a problem with Mauer being in a mini slump just because he was a number one pick, is a hometown kid (what does that have to do with anything anyway?), and it's the stretch run, don't you think you're being at least a little tough on him?? He's 23 years old and has a brilliant looking career ahead of him. Seems like you're judging the entirety of his short career on the past two weeks. I wouldn't say the guy is off limits for bashing, there just isn't much to bash. Twins fans are for the most part pretty critical. If Mauer gives us a reason to rant, then we most likely will. Over the course of hitting .350 for a season, there's bound to be a lull in the action. And what's up with comparing Prior and Mauer? At the time the top pick appeared to be toss up. Where is Prior now? Believe me, no one is going to remember one month of struggling at the plate when he is going to Cooperstown.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
