I'm having a heck of a time trying to get any work done this week, anticipating spending this Thurs thru Tuesday in Heaven - er Basswood.

This year our group will have the usual 9 guys that have been going together for years. We'll be joined by a group of 4 guys from the Brainerd area, and then, last but not least, Dr. Bob, his son Jake, and Xplorer. Man, I'm glad you guys are coming up this year!!

If anyone else gets near the Washington Island area, stop by and say Hi. Here's to hoping the weather gods are with us and everyone has a fantastic opener.

What you all doing?

Thanks for the invite!
I'll probably be on Big V. (family cabin)
All FM'ers stop by the north side cabin in Armstrong Bay! I will post all my V. fishing info on the Vermilion site. I am keeping a log book this year - dambit!

You guys have fun and the best of luck on Basswood.

Myself and 11 others will be tormenting Snowbank Lake for lakers and walldogs. It should be a riot and one heck of a good time.

To all the rest, may the fish gods shine their light upon you.

Good luck,

HB - That sounds like quite the crew. Have a blast. I'll be stopping by to see Bob the Bartender on Wednesday night with my Mom for a burger and a beer or two. I'll tell him you said hey.

Are you staying at Smittys?

Leaky,

We'll have a blast, hopefully the fish will cooperate. With 6 boats, somebody should be able find the fish. Got a tip for fishing Snowbank on the opener the last time I saw Bob the bartender, so definitely give him a hey for me. I am counting on that being my ace in the hole. Some of us are going to try and stop in there on Sunday night and grab a refreshment (like we'll need any), maybe we'll see him. He's a legend.

Yep - we're staying at Smitty's and will be enjoying their fine food on Saturday night. I can't wait to get up there.

Gotta work most of the day frown.gif I will be thinking of all of you lucky FM'rs out there. I may go and do some shore fishing in the evening with the mrs.

The stress is building shocked.gif.

I will not relax until the truck is loaded and ready to roll. But here I sit at work waiting until I am free to get my stuff together. Hopefully I will not have too many interuptions at home tonight, the weather will cooperate, and I can get most of it done. That would be nice.....

Is anyone else stressed out too confused.gif ?

For all of you who are self employed or have a boss who drives you, you must realize that the only time you get extremely busy is when you are trying to get out of town!!!!!! The Mrs. and I are planning to leave tomorrow morning yet I am so #*!*# busy that I think we will be lucky to get on the road by 2pm. And that's if I work until very late tonight and very early tomorrow. We are heading up to the BWCA and meeting some friends for an extended fishing weekend. Good luck all! Just know, in a few days all the stress will be gone and the fish will be biting.

Hey everyone, me and three buddies are leaving the flat lands of Illnois to headup to Basswood. Hey Timmo,

Are you guys going in over Prairie Portage?

Posted

Hey Dr. Bob,

Yes sir, prairie portage, saying hello to the twins there, then it's off to fish. Hopeing the water is up a little bit there at the falls, seems it's been somewhat low the past couple of years, doesn't seem the smallies are holding in there like they use too. We stay on Moose and make the trek over to Prairie portage every morning, Love Basswood Lake, nothing better...

Posted

You got that right!

We will be down in the Washington Island area. Do you think you will make it down that far?

Posted

Timmo - If you venture down as far as we are, stop by. Just pull up to any boat you see in that area and chances are excellent it will be part of our group.

Say Hi to Jane and Danny at Mikes Liquor. I'll be making a stop in there myself.

Mikes Liquor is always a fun stop for us in Ely. I will be sure to say hello to them. We should make it over near Washington Island, or thereabouts. Will be heading over to Hoist Bay a few times I'm sure. Hopefully I'll run into you fella's. We'll be in North County Lodge Lunds, Give us a shout if ya see us. I'm getting fired up, I'm ready to go now. I hear smallies and wallies calling. Tight lines gentlemen.

Timmo -

Keep your eyes open for a 16' Brown Camo Lund with a Brown Camo Johnson 25, Minkota TM and a net standing up in the back. It will have a portly fellow with a white beard at the tiller, a really cute kid in the middle and a golden retriever in the front.

It will be the boat releasing all of the REALLY BIG WALLEYES grin.gif.

It would be great to hook up!

Whos the kid going to be with you, a son, a grandson maybe? I hope to be getting into those large walleye as well.

Hey Dr. Bob,

We'll be using live bait as I'm sure you guys will also, do you guys use the regular old pike sucker minnows, or rainbows? Taking a couple of rods along, one lined with 8# test and the other with 10#, which do you think is more ideal for the various species of fish in Basswood, 8# is on a light to medium action rod, while the 10# is on more of medium action. Maybe you can help me out.

Posted

TIMMO - I know Dr. Bob is in Duluth and I just stopped home on my way out, so maybe I can help you.

We use strictly rainbows this time of year. The sucker minnows aren't necessary unless you want to drop one under a bobber for big Pike.

As far as line, I use 6 lb on my medium light rods. Thats pretty much all I use for rods since we're not Pike fishing. I like the lighter line and have never broke unless a Northern bites me off. A lot of the other guys use 8, and 10 should be good for your heavier rod. I know Bob has gone to the braided lines and I haven't tried those yet

Careful of those deer on your way up!

Thanks Jim,

Appreciate your help, I'll have to stop off and gets some rainbows from babe's bait & tackle on my way through town. I thought of using 6#, I was scared it was a little too light, I might have to try now that you mention that's what you've been using, and I have seen your pictures page at yahoo, so the proof is in the pudding. I might end up eating deer meat the whole week up at north country lodge if last years drive up is any indication, I think we lost count at about 150 deer on the side of the road. Wonder if venison is good Northern bait? smile.gif Well have a safe trip Leaky, Really hope we run into you fella's up there. We are staying the week, so maybe we will catch you on the return trip , or out on Basswood somewhere. Tightlines to ya sir.

6# is all you will need. Get a real with a good drag or back real and you will be fine. Maybe 8# tops. I like Trilene XT or Power Pro or Fireline for jigging.
Watch out for Bob he has a secret slip bobber trick he uses. Takes everyones $ with it! grin.gif

Posted

Thanks Northlander - I also use the Trilene XT, seems to have been pretty reliable. So, Dr. Bob has a slip bobber trick, wonder what it could be? I don't want to find out by losing money, thanks for the warning. Will you be along with Dr. Bob and Leaky on the basswood trip?

On the South Shore...  There is still some good ice fishing to take advantage of if you still have that itch and want to ice some walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, maybe an eelpout and certainly big pike.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st.  Some resorts have called it a season, but other resorts still have fish houses out, are still fishing and have availability.     Fishing reports have been good.  Numbers of walleyes, saugers and perch.  Using electronics is super helpful with some larger walleyes swimming through suspended.    It was a great week of pike fishing for most.  Good numbers of fish and some big fish tipping that 40 inch mark coming topside.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom has been effective.  Most pike anglers are fishing in depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen from Nelson Park at Birchdale, MN (30 miles east of Baudette) and to the west, which is where most anglers spring fish.  The ice is showing signs of deteriorating in places.  The river is open water about 20 miles east of Birchdale near Loman.  Things are happening.   A good reminder, as of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.   Sturgeon fishing.  Once the open water appears, sturgeon are active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle.  There is still some ice fishing happening with some, and others have called it a season.  Call ahead if you have that itch for one last ice fishing trip.   Walleyes, saugers, perch, crappies and pike are in good numbers.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

what area.....there are already some in  the southern part of the state ice free.    northern part of the state..i'll go with april 10th!!!!!

🤣 mayhaps your looking in all the wrong places!!!!!!!🙄😉

It's that time of year again. What are your predictions for ice out this year?   I'll guess exactly one month from today - April 18th. Fishing opener is a little earlier this year so hopefully we aren't running up against the clock.

Ya know I typically don't cruise through Inger too often. Still looking for a plastic, orthopedic or cardiothoracic surgeon so I can be a stay at home husband and catch walleye every day. Not a whole lot of those in this neck of the woods 😆
