NL Central Race Heats Up

Well Tim, the battle for mediocracy continues into the stretch run. The Cards currently lead the division by .0004 winning percentage. What's that, a 1/25th game lead? smile.gif

My early call is the Cards will be back in front in a week based on scheduling. But if you don't close the deal right now, I like the Reds chances of taking the central. I think the Cards have better pitching, but the Reds appear hungrier.

Reds play the next 9 on the road vs contending teams SF, LA, SD

Cards play the next 9 at home vs CHC, FLA, PIT. Probably non-contending teams, now that the Cubs traded away Nefster P, "The Bunt King". Now isn't this a lot more fun than winning the division by 15 games Tim?

Go Cubbies, my favorite team this weekend!

I just heard on ESPN radio that the Cards have lost like 18 of the last 23 or something like that.... shocked.giffrown.gifshocked.giffrown.gif

Wow Tim, sounds like your frustrated with them. Reds have broken my heart many times, and they will probably do it again, but I just can't give up on them as long as they appear to be trying to win.

Well I don't know about Geno, But I'm not going to beg you to cheer for the Cards Tim. You'll just have to get over this by yourself. smile.gif

"Actually I am feeling a bit better spinner as my Browns topped the Bills 20-17"

Turning to the Cleveland Browns preseason schedule to raise your spirits? This could be far most desperate than I thought. We're here for you Tim. grin.gif

LMFAO! Spinner just saying that pleading my (Contact Us Please) off and dying after every pitch and lack of clutch perfomances and the team just not showing any life what - so- ever has gotten me mad.gif Walt Jockety as well as he said there were 2 or 3 Cardinals underperforming and unfortunately I know all 3 Edmonds, Isringhausen, Molina and I would mention Mulder as well. Well, I'm sticking with the reverse psychology so here it goes... I hope the Cards get there but kicked today mad.gif

Spinner,

Your Reds are keeping it interesting, but don't go buying any playoff tix while in the ME.

Tim,

You asked me to have them lay down, and so far they have. My only salvation has been watching the WSox slide into 3rd behind the Twins. Terrible to say, but this year I'm having more fun rooting against the Wsox than for the Cubs - pathetic!

So now you don't honestly believe that such a "powerful" lineup like the Cubs' (1 run in 2 games) can actually win the final of the series today, do you? And by the way, looks to me like it is the Mets' year, so don't blame Walt J - don't think there's anything he can do about that for the Cards.

I know exactly what you're saying Tim. The Reds nor the Cards deserve to play in October. I get aggravated with the Reds too. Griffey just watched a strike three pitch in the dirt sail past the catcher. Does he have time to advance to first? Probably, but we'll never know because he walked directly to the dugout instead of trying. What did I expect for $12 1/2 million. Same laziness from Adam Dunn sometimes.

Geno

Same here. I have really grown attached to the Twins this year. I have that same desire to see them knock the Chisox out of the playoffs. I don't expect it, but watch the race closely.

Who in the heck is Gary Bennett? He's a Cub killer and now since were finished with the Cubs he will go back to hitting .192. I'm predicting a Marlins sweep Spinner by the Marlins naturally got keep thing consistent. grin.gif I bet you can't wait for your Reds west road trip to end man you guys are getting killed out there. I see since the Red Sox don't have a prayer of getting back into the playoff race that there starters Ortiz and Ramirez are coasting through the rest of the season with aches in pains, why push it with the team tanking so bad and the Yankees on a roll...

Yes Tim, this may be all for the Reds. Losing the one run games we have been winning this year. Lohse finally pitched a bad game. (5 runs in only 5 IP). If he can't return to mediocrity, that will do it. Reds are a powerhitting machine that can't play small ball when we have to. Don't have the offense to overcome bad pitching. Our only playoff hope it to win the NL Central. I really never thought we could win the wildcard without .500 play on the west coast. But it was a fun year no matter how it ends. Unless we lose 25 straight of course. frown.gif

It's hard to find a team playing well right now. Didn't think I would say that about the AL Central at any time this year. I see two teams about ready for the playoffs, and they are both from NY.

In any event, this is day 363 of IraqSucksTour05/06. I'm moving West about 7,000 miles in a couple days. Be back to argue with you guys in about a week.

Isn't the Earth only 24,000 miles around? Guess you aren't even halfway around the Globe then?

You will be welcomed home I'm sure.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
