I will be heading up to try out this lake June 5th-8th. I have never been up there and was wondering if anyone can tell me about their fishing trips to that lake. I heard it was a good small mouth lake and sometimes the walleyes can be good also. I beleive we are staying at Hungry Jack Lodge. Any tips for some good walleye fishing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Riptide.

We were staying at the Hungry Jack Lodge a few years ago. It was a little cool and rainy, but the fish are definitely in there. We used this little mepps type spinner and a light blueish-green with a gold or silver blade. I had to drive down to Grand Marais to get a couple because that is what they were going for that day. My friend has a knack for hauling in fish, if I caught five, he caught fifty. (Ooh, there's one!...Ooh, there's another- like a broken record...!) There is a slot, you couldn't keep anything over 11 inches, but there are lots of big ones, they are trying to keep the fishing fun that way. The folks at the lodge were very accomodating, and the huge chocolate lab "Chester" plays a mean tug of war... Cabins were nice, with bunks, kitchens and full sized fridges, boats to rent or canoe if you want. Nice cleaning house. Fishing was best on the inlets and bays then, generally close to shore. The crew cooks up meals for you if you go there, serves the guests before they sit down, make sure you've gotten enough, too.

Thanks Knotwood. Did you have any luck on the walleyes or were you just going for the smallies?

Nobody caught walleyes that trip... the hosts might be able to steer you to a certain spot, but a different lake would probably give you better success. It's like a big community up there, and lots of stories, the locals won't give you the details of the great holes, but can steer you towards something anyway. Hungry Jack is a jumping off spot to other lakes, portage in with canoes (we never got into those). They'll help out- short of hiring a guide, which if you've never fished one of those big lakes in that area, can be well worth the money. Lots to choose from!
