I am a catch and release angler who usually fishes the MN river. Does anyone know which Pools on the Mississippi hold some nice flatheads and channel cats? i plan to go out in two weeks.

I was catching some channels up to 10 Lbs a few weeks ago in the back channel on Pool 4. I was targeting walleyes so I think a guy might do okay if he was fishing for them.

I fish pool 5A by Winona. Yesterday I caught a 8# flathead while fishing for sunfish on a flyrod, what a blast! Last week I caught several channel cats in the 2# range. They are there and biting. Get some of that stink bait and a treble hook with the bait holder and be careful you don't sink the boat.

Sounds fun. Just started fishing 5a from a boat this summer. Where do you begin when hunting for the cats?

I grew up down in the La Crosse area and worked on the river for a while. There were some huge flatheads caught. 60+ was the biggest I saw personally. Snags or wingdams around deep scour holes are a good place to look.

I usually start above a wingdam and bounce my bait back over the edge. You have to get the right weight for the conditions so it kind of slowly rolls along the bottom.. I do have some spots where there are trees down in current in about 10' of water that are good. wink.gif

Tim are you fishing in that catfish tourney??? the timing is real close??

I doubt i will fish any tournaments. i am trying to find some good "holes" for cats on the Miss so when the water level is down on the MN river i can go to the Miss. What tourney were you talking about?

It is  pretty shiny piece of equipment. I was able to purchase it on my scab job wages 😆 I don't think I'll update the electronics any time soon, 3 screens is enough?

Just another "Words matter"   Voting on school levy. This was posted on the School "education district" building door.  We had a nice cold walk all the way around the building! The arrow was added, after we educated them! 😒

Obviously this is more of a hot topic due to forward facing sonar. With that being said, I know people who have pulled crappies out of basins 40+ deep since the fl-8 and zercom flashers came out. That's over 30 years ago. I do think there's a push to ban these in MN and I could see them doing it here. They'll have to pay my livescope from my cold dead hands 😆 on days I can't catch a walleye jigging or rigging it's nice to turn it on and throw corks at individual fish

It wasn't just you, I was fishing west of you about an hour on Monday. Fished 8am-4pm, no fish, two keeper walleye and one small one from 4pm-630pm. Marked a lot of fish, they would come up to a jig and swim away. They were skittish to the dead stick too

I wonder like divers, if we let them decompress every 10' for 1/2hr. If that would help?  🤔  It would slow the bite down a bit!  🤭
