...a week makes. confused.gif I had a guide trip this afternoon and evening with a gentelman from Lakeville. Go Red Sox, right Rob? smirk.gif We had a great time despite the lack of 'eye activity in my boat today. Again, the roller coaster continues to challenge the fishermen in this area. I have never seen the fish change patterns this much since landing in Le Sueur in 2000. The 'eye movement seems strange this year and is something I can not necessarily put my finger on. But, at any rate, let me fill you in on what didn't work today. grin.gif

We were on Tetonka and started fishing ~3:30 pm in 25 - 30' of water off deep points holding rock and gravel dragging jigs and leeches or crawlers. We had one fish get off half-way to the boat, but that was it. We then moved to a "needle" of an underwater point that rises all the way to 2' and casted to this area with #5 shallow shad raps and Rat-L-Traps only to have the northerns tear up our gear and a few "short" largemouth. As the clock approached 6:30 pm, I then made a move to the area where we connected last weekend only to find this area completely empty of any life. So, I made a significant move to the west end of the lake and power trolled #5 shallow and standard shad raps over a weed line that is still intact in 7 - 10' of water but we didn't catch anything there either. The final move for the last 45 minutes of the outing found us trolling #7 deep diving shad raps in sections of the river channel on the east end of the lake in 14 - 16' of water. In this area, we had a few "pushes" and also a few fish get off on the way to the boat. All in all, it was a day for the northerns and bass to shine. We could not get an 'eye to come to the boat. So, if the streak continues, this weekend will be hot as pistol again down there. blush.gif I'm going to stay after 'em because I know they didn't leave the lake. Heck, maybe they did and they've pushed themselves into Sakatah? grin.gifgrin.gif

More guide trips on the horizon so look for the reports to continue whether they're good or bad.

Good luck and we'll see you on the water.

T.O.,

If you havn't already, you might want to get back out on Madison and fish the way you like to this time of year. Was out Sat. night and the shad are thick right now in the shallows. Was casting cranks to a very large school working a shallow flat and all I could catch were shad--snagging them on most casts. Had the whole family out so I couldn't really do what I wanted but the eyes had to be in there. Can't say if they've moved up all across the lake but the area I was in was loaded.

I was out on tetonka saturday morning for a few hours and caught a bass and northern. Casting in the same type of area you were...2' flat that dropped to 10'-12' The eyes are in there. My father in law was catching them off the dock the night before.

With the lack of catching being reported lately, I've been wondering if the bite has moved to an overnight bite. I'm not talking a "1/2hr before and 1hr after sunset" type of bite, more like a midnight - 4:00am or something along those lines.

Anyone tried the late night/early pre-dawn hours lately? We all know the fish are out there, perhaps lately it's been a timing thing?

Thanks for the shad report zepman. That's good to hear. I was starting to wonder. smirk.gif My upcoming trips will be on Tetonka/Sakatah and then I'll be heading back to Madison by the first part of August. Looking forward to the change in scenery. grin.gif

Eric, it's always a timing thing but you're better opportunities may be presenting themselves in the evening. It's hard to say with these fish shifting patterns so much. With that being said, last weekend we had fish going all day during that stifling heat. They definitely have us guessing which is why I love it so much. smile.gif

How long does the shad in the shallows last on madison ?

With the Full Moon, It would seem that the bite would move away from a day bite.

I like to see the moon over head and a bit to the east.

Not necessarily. Mid-day and Midnight are classic full moon "prime times".

I'll go with the high tide. Plus I don't have to look at my watch. grin.gif

From past experience, the shad migration is well behind when it typically is. With that being said, now that the shad have made their way in shallow, I would look for these baitfish to stay shallow into the first part of October. Once the water temperature drops to the mid-50's, you'll see many of these baitfish transition out to the first breaks and beyond and the 'eyes will follow.
