Motor stolen - need estimate of replacement value and opinions on recourse

Question

Posted

A friend of mine had a 1982 Evinrude 9.9 stolen about a week ago while it was out on loan to his boss.

Have been trying help out to find out how much one of these goes for so he can make his case to the boss for reimbursement.

I've looked in some of the "bluebook" sites, but these seem way off. There's no way you can replace this motor for like $230 as the bluebook said.

So, a couple questions.

What is the approximate fair value of this motor (it was pretty clean)?

And, the guy says his homeowners won't cover it. Is this BS, or probably true? At the time of the theft it was on a small boat down by the river on the the guy's property.

A search on ebay reveals that you could pick up a mid-eighties for approx $500. That is the figure I would use.

To me the real value of something, is:

1. How much it costs to replace the same item

2. The amount someone would pay to buy it (ebay).

Not the NADA garbage wink.gif

Yeah, I've been telling him to insist on a similar replacement. Problem is around here they seem to be pretty scarce, so consideration of the cash aspect is sort of a secondary plan.

It should be valued at the replacement cost for your area of the country. Some areas they aren't worth much and other areas they are scarce and worth a bunch.

If it were me, I might just have him find one and replace it. I wouldn't be concerned on brand as long as he finds a name brand motor.

A few years back a friend of mine had his motor stolen off his boat while parked in his back yard. His homeowners insurance replaced the motor. He had a pretty old motor and the insurance gave him $1500 to replace the motor. He guessed the motor was worth about $150. Maybe your buddy should call the his (buddy) insurance company and talk to a rep. The rep maybe be able to call your bosses insurance to work something out.

I think your boss should make some effort to replace the motor.

Your boss should replace the motor with a similar motor in the same year class... period.

Home owners insurance WILL cover it if its on his property.. but the insurance company will inflate the insurance premiums if there is a claim, or possibly cancel his policy if he already has previous claims.

It would be in his best interest to replace the motor himself. A mid 80's 10 hp motor is going to cost from $500-$750 on the average.

I would discuss it with the boss and shop around for motors.. when you see one of your liking... bring him the ad.

I think that is just the unspoken rule.. if you are using something you dont own, you bring it back in at least the same condition you got it in. If it disappears in your care, you replace it with an item at least as good as the one you used.

Am I wrong?

That Guy is right on the mark.

If the boss didn't immediately offer to replace the motor, he should have. Plain and simple.

That Guy is correct, $ 500 / $ 750 would be a fair price for a good running motor.

I assume there is a police report for this theft, if not I would suggest getting one, just in case......you never know how things go with some people.

Yes, there is a police report, but no serial numbers recorded.

That's a lesson in and of itself.

Personally, I have inventory of every serialized item I have including pictures burnt onto a CD-ROM and stored in a safety deposit box at the bank.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think he should talk to his boss's insurance company himself just to be square on the insurance thing. He's a great guy, but not too aggressive when it comes to things like this. You know the kind, just assumes others will do the right thing.

Now, I wish I'd just get my boat back from the shop... crazy.gif

Sometimes this place is just like work......you say something and later on some else says the same thing and gets the credit......jeesh no respect tongue.gifgrin.gif

At any rate, if that was me and your motor was stolen, I'd give you fair market ASAP. Just a respect thing for me.

I treat other people's property as if they were my own.Just ask PapaGrump about his taillight. wink.gif

What a crap person the boss is. That is all I can say.

Regarding the homeowner's insurance covering the loss... my dad just had to take out a seperate policy on his T8 kicker motor because it wasn't covered under his home insurance policy because it wasn't the main motor...

Maybe that's why he's having issues with getting it covered.... confused.gif

Hmmm....

I wonder if the homeowner's won't cover it because it was not the homeowner's motor?

If the guy told his insurance that it was a borrowed motor, maybe that's tough luck on the coverage?

Lets not forget it is only about a $500 motor, which is most likely under any homeowners policy deductible....
