Is now the time to head to Orwell since they are slowing the output? Or should I have been there yesterday?

Posted

I'm thinking now's the time. I talked with a guy who fished there last night and he said he's been having a hard time finding the big smallies. It seems like everytime I go down there, there are less and less big fish.

It's still a blast though. I was thinking about heading down there myself this weekend. Maybe we should try and meet up if you're not too busy?

Were is Orwell? I have heard of it just never seen it.

Well, I just got off of work early so I think I might go get my weekend work done now and then probably hit Big C. Friday night to check out the night bite.

What time would you think on Saturday? If I don't stay out all night Friday (or maybe straight thru?) I'll throw the duck boat and kayak on the sled trailer for Saturday morning at Orwell.

Scott, I've got a couple things I want to get done this weekend, so I might scrap getting out.

BUT, I will be going down there tomorrow after I get done with work in Fergus at noon. I'll probably be down there by 1pm. Any takers?

For those who wanted to know, Orwell dam is located on the Otter Tail River, southwest of Fergus Falls on OT County rd 15. It is operated by the Army Corps of Engineers and there is a picnic shelter and restrooms as well as a playground for the kiddies. Definitely a great spot to take the family down for the afternoon.

Let me know how it goes. I've got a couple others I'm thinking of too.... crazy.gif

Decisions, decisions confused.gifgrin.gif

Remember, if you are boating at Orwell it is a 10hp maximum. I often take the dog out there for a swim and lately there have been larger hp than allowed.

A friend who fishes it a fair amount say's the bite has been poor.

don't worry, I'll be shore fishing

Fishing was real slow on the fly. Only got a couple of strikes. I don't think I had what they wanted. Switched to my spinning rod and caught smallies and crappies on a white twister tail. Went upstream towards the spillway and tossed spinners and beetle spins; one smallie and a couple of strikes. Fianlly switched to diving rapalas. I reall cranked on her good to keep the lure deep. I was finally rewarded. Caught a bunch of smallies, channel cats, a 20 lb plus buffalo and a redhorse before having to leave for dinner. Diving crankbaits were definitely the hot ticket item. Color seemed insignificant today.

Deadhead,

Rumor has it they're going to start dumping more water out of the dam- were the water levels up?

Posted

Scoot, the water levels were still low (about 300 cfs) , about the lowest I've ever seen it. I've heard that they are going to be storing water in the reservoir as a contingency plan for Fargo for the drought. It could be they may be bumping up flows for increased irrigation use, but I don't know how they'll be able to store more water that way. What was the rumour you heard?

Posted

All I heard was they were planning on helping out the Red by dumping more water through the Ottertail. Apparently they released this info in the Fargo Forum recently.

The Corp. of Engineers want to raise Orwell 4' to store water for the Red. I don't understand what is happening, but I do know that all the rivers (and lakes) went from flooding conditions a couple months ago to really low levels now. Lakes and rivers have receded big time.

Back in May/June I was hoping for a drought period, but this is getting extreme.. smirk.gif

Hey guys, had a chance to go down and fish Orwell on Sunday morning before it got REALLY hot. I had tons of fun, but you're right - it's low. Caught everything: Catfish, carp, Smallies, Walleye and Northern. Biggest walleye was a nice 18" and hit on a Rapala fire-tiger. Biggest northern was ~24", biggest bass was about 18 or 19". C&R everything, didn't have a camera as I really hadn't planned on doing any fishing this weekend. crazy.gif The color of the day was...pink. Couldn't get the smallies to hit on anything but pink, and trust me I threw everything I had at 'em except for my Gatorade bottle. grin.gif

2 1/2 hrs, 14 fish. Priceless! I'll go there anytime! I hear the dead of winter is a hoot! Any takers???

thanks for the tip. I might have to tie up some pink flies....

The wife and kid will be out of town this weekend, so I may head down there this weekend for some action.

JP...I wish I could but I'm on call this weekend, mad.gif and I got a feeling I'd better stick close to the PC so I can dial in to sites during WeFest.

One of these days our timing is going to coincide and we'll "Git er Done!"

I'm probably going to stick pretty close to trackin down the walleyes on Big C. til the 22nd of Sept. after this weekend. My son and I are going to fish the Big C. fall classic tounament and win $4900! grin.gif
