Wash them out with dish detergent, if they are sandy, if not, wipe them down and put some Quantum Hot Sauce in there every winter. (Plus, when the wife isnt looking, I upgrade every now and again, you know, to relieve the pressure on the older ones. They need to get their rest). Seriously though, I am a big fan of the Hot Sauce. Back when reels were made of metal...remember those days?...Once a year, I would disassemble, wash each gear/part, then put toothpaste in them and reel for about twenty minutes. The theory was that the abrasiveness in the toothpaste would smooth out the reel. Afterwards, wash it out and re-oil. Worked for me. With the plastic parts of today's reels, I dont think I would use the toothpaste. PS...dont forget to oil the roller bearing.

how do you oil the roller bearing

On the older reels, the roller bearing had a screw that you could take out, then disassemble the part. As long as your roller is "rolling" efficiently, then I wouldnt worry about it. There may be enough of a gap in there to get a little oil in it though. Like all parts of the reel, you dont want to over-oil the bearing. Another thing to look at in your reels is behind the spool, where the drag spring is. That area seem to always collect dirt/sand/gunk. Rinse that out and re-oil/grease. I always try to put a little oil in the reel handle...the grip itself. Another thing to try to rinse out to get the gunk out. In the winter time, I store all of my reels inside the house to keep the moisture off of them...as if that matters, they were made to get wet, but you know. Like they say, take care of them and they will take care of you. Hope this helps.

There is a half moon shaped piece that is attached on the underneath side of the level wind guide. I assume that is the part going bad. Or it could be the grooved insert (in the tube part underneath the level wind). Call Garcia for replacement parts, or send it in. Garcia's are pretty simple to fix I think. Probably the half moon thing that fits into the grooved insert. Check it first. If you have disassembled the reel recently, it may just be that it isnt sitting right in there. Good luck and let us know how Garcia is to deal with. I would imagine pretty good.

1900 is right. the half moon pc is called a pal. if you look on the underside of your level wind( the metal loop thing that the line goes through grin.gif), there is a screw that comes out. i would just take it to a repair shop . they should have the part, and it only takes a couple of minutes to change.
