Hey I have fished the big lake twice on a charter and loved it, but both times were late in the summer. I hear the salmon fishing is preaty good in May so me and my dad are planing a trip up there the 22-24th and bringing our own boat. We have only 2 spoons, a orange chartruese and a purple/black. What color, brand spoons produce? We have 2 manual downriggers that we use for walleyes, do we even need to bring them?? I was thinking about seting them shallow like 10 feet just to get more lines down. We have 2 planer boards. We have plenty of walleye stick baits. Like Jointed, husky jerk, husky floater, floater, and shad raps in Rapala in many different colors, will they work?? I saw a fishing show where they were using husky jerks and catching some salmon, trout off them in superior. What depths should we fish? HOw deep should we fish? How far out, what areas should we fish? Im assuming we will have to fish wisconsin waters. I think we are going to launch out of Barkers Island. Any help would be apreciated.

Wow, lots to tackle here. (Notice the play on words there!) grin.gif Yes, bring the downriggers, and as you suggested setting them shallow with a little longer lead, maybe 50-100 ft out. Try 1 with a spoon, and the other with a jointed rapala or longer stick bait. Put out the boards, and if you fish WI, you get 3 lines per person on the big lake so if you can get all 6 in. Board lines with 1 deep diver rapala and one shallow runner would be a good start, and try roughly 50-60 feet behind the boards. That time of year we should have some surface fishing especially over on the WI waters. If you can I would suggest coming next weekend to the Superior rigging event, may get a few more questions answered. Good luck, hope that helps.

Thanks End Of The Line. Sorry I cant make the rigging event unless I somehow talk my dad into going Looper fishing, and I have never been able to do that so its unlikly.
We have Tons of husky jerks in all colers since they work so good on walleyes on mille lacs, have you had any luck using them on superior? Also my friends dad is a Pro fisherman and he is sponsered by Reef Runner so he has hundreds of them in all possible colers including custom colers. How do they work for salmon/trout, I can get them for free so I thought I might try a few but not sure what colors to get or what depth since the majority of the Reef Runers he has are deep divers that run 28 feet, he also has some that run 12 and 6-8 feet.

Dont be afraid to run any color. The more options you have the better. I use reef runners, but seldom use the deep divers that they have because there are too eratic in my spread when I have ot so many lines, but you might find them to be a very successful on your trip having so few lines in the water. Get it wet! That's the only way to know if it works. And for goodness sakes take any free tackle you can get!!! grin.gif

Roosterslayer05,
Yes the reefrunners will work on superior, and if you are on the superior entry/south shore area they might catch ya a nice walleye or 2. At that time of year i would suggest using both the regular ripstick (@12' dive) and the the little rippers (@4-6" dive) off your lines.
I would suggest colors of chartreuse pearl minnow, purple demon, flame, and orange juice to start. Purple, pink, orange and clown colors have worked for me. If ya got Bombers they have worked well on the surface for me also. You never know what you'll pull in at that time of year. Let us know what weekend you'll be up and i bet there will be a couple guys out there also who can hook up with ya out there on the frs/cell. I'm itchin to get out but there is still ice in the harbor.

PS: If you can get your hand on a couple "mooneye minnow" little rippers and a couple of the same in ripsticks, i will buy them from ya. I have had no luck finding them around here and think that they may be good in the river/lake for eyes.
