First let me apologize for my ignorance. I have fished for lakers, cohos, chinook, rainbows(steelhead), and browns, while I lived near Milwaukee, up until I moved just south of Walker this last spring.

What IS a looper?? I've always liked kickin' back with my rods stuck in a bucket waiting for a big one. So what is a looper?

Thanks,
Doug

GunDr,
A looper is pharce, I don't believe there is such a thing. Have yet to catch one in four tries.

Actually it is a coldwater strain of Rainbow Trout, Kamloop is its real name. I believe they are from Canadian descent. They are largely stocked on the North Shore of Lake Superior and return to the mouths every spring for spawning. I'm sure someone else will pipe in with some more info for you soon enough.

A Looper is a strain of Rainbow trout stocked here in Lake Superior by the MN DNR. The term 'Looper' derives from its actual name of "Kamloop". Just a nickname given to them here.

Back on Lake Michigan around the Milwaukee area, the DNR stock the lake with another strain of rainbow called Skamania(spelling?). I've caught 2 from a boat and one from shore. Seemed like I was flying a kite more than fighting a fish. From the time the line tightened up on them they where in the air right to the net.

Since I've been watching this site, the itch is dying to be scratched again.

Skamania Steelhead are a summer run Steelhead. Our rivers don't have the suitable flow in the summer for these guys.

Thanks guys for the info. One more thing, when your fishing one the bottom, are you "near" the bottom, using a slip-bobber, or letting it lay there.

Thanks again for the info,

Doug

You'll be inflating a worm or using spawn bags with marshmallow or small styrofoam balls to float it. Because of the rocks I go a minimum of 2' between the hook and drop rig, slinky or slip sinker.

A Looper is the name given to a strain of mythic rainbow trout that the fishing gods used to tempt impressionable college kids in the early eighties to skip classes and thus seriously jeopardize their collegiate careers (the only positive was missing out on bad hair and bad music).

As time passed, the lore of Loopers has been raised to mythic proportions ranking only with the likes of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Chupacabra.

The term Looper is also referred to those in search of rainbows in Lake Superior. As one gets older the distance traveled to perhaps tangle with the legendary fish (thus driving in one big loop) has caused many to utter words like “That dude freezing his hinder off must be of them Loopers”

I also believe the term “Getting looped” or “He must be looped” is derivative from Looper fishing.

Anyway, that’s just my FYI on Loopers. grin.gif
