You have to start considering MVP at this point.

And he's only fighting for 3rd place among AL catchers for all-star votes! mad.gif

He's hitting .389 I believe, how can he not be in the Allstar game? If AJ is selected over Mauer then there is something wrong with the system.

He's still shy of MVP consideration becuase his RBI's are still low for an MVP, but in a few years I think there will be a real shot at it possibly.

So Windy, 2 questions for ya. One, do you think Guillen will pick Mauer? Two, if it comes down to Mauer vs AJ for a spot, who would you pick?

yes Mauer is on a roll I want to see .400 really bad, not for the entire season but just for him to hit the mark, and I need to start drinking land-o' lakes milk! haha

I think Mauer, Santana and Liriano all deserve to be named to the ll-Star team this year. But Guillen, who gets the privilege of selecting the All-Star reserves for winning the World Series last year, plans to load the team with Sox, meaning deserving players all over the league will be left out.

But we cant blame Ozzie, though, he's just following a trend Joe Torre shamefully started a few years ago when he stocked his teams with underachieving Yankees.

It's bad enough that the fans pick the starters (Jorge Posada leads Mauer in voting wtf????), and now the managers are making a mockery of the process as well.

Tom Kelly picked the 1992 AL team, and while he easily could have decided to send Brian Harper, Shane Mack or Greg Gagne to what would've been their only All-Star game, he picked only Chuck Knoblauch and Rick Aguilera. Because he knew others were more deserving.

It's too bad none of today's managers are able to show the same restraint.

Either limit the number of players that can come from one team, or strip the managers of the privilege.

He definately should be at the All Star game, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Ozzie go with AJ. Though I did read an article and I can't remember on what site, that Ozzie may get some "strong suggestions" that MLB to go with Mauer. Though given his current relationship with the commissioner's office I'm sure he'll go with AJ anyways.

.392 in the bottom of the 5th, 2 for 3 with a single and a double.

He's just not human.

Lets not forget Morneau he's got his average up to .289 and is 3 for 3 again today.

Im gonna call you on this one because guess how many RBIs Ichiro had in his MVP season in 2001...

anyone, anyone?

69

Doesnt matter if he was leadoff or not 69 is 69. Mauer's catching position will factor in for sure. If Mauer can keep up the hitting and he finishes 10 points higher than the next guy in BA, he'll be on the shortlist if not tops for MVP.

If you just look at the stats Ichiro shouldn't have been the MVP in 2001 anyways.

Giambi hit .342 only 8 points behind Ichiro's .350, Giambi also hit 38 HR's and 120 RBI's compared to Ichiro's 8 HR's and 69 RBI's.

The main reasons Ichiro got the MVP was becuase of his hit total of 242, he is one of only 3 to ever have over 240 hits in a season, and Seattle went 116-46 in 2001 which helps make a case for him as the best player on the best team.

Mauer is hurt in his MVP chance becuase he is not on the best team in baseball like Ichiro was, and he is not on pace to have over 240 hits like Ichiro did, in fact he trails Ichiro by almost 20 hits already.

Since MVP awards go to the person who helped their team the most they almost always go to the best player on one of the best teams from the regular season. So since the Twins are barely over .500 an argument can be made for how important was Mauers great season since it didn't help the twins get to the playoffs.

He will need to do something extraordinary to get the MVP this year, like hit .400 or close to it.

I say give him year or two and when the twins are again at the top of the league like I think they will be then if he is still hitting like this then he will have that shot at an MVP award. For now lets just hope he makes an allstar game.

Not saying Mauer will win the MVP this year, I don't think he will, but how about Kirk Gibson in 1988 .290 avg 25 hr 76 RBIs. Granted this was 1988, but that year Gibson was the MVP to his team.

Voters might not look at a player like Gibson today and even give him any consideration, but we can never say never if Gibson won it maybe, just maybe Mauer could too. I think for him to win it the Twins would have to pull off the near impossible and somehow jump over the sox and the tigers take the division and go the world series! I can dream right! grin.gif

I'm not saying its impossible, I would certainly love it if he did win it but I think it is a long shot at best. MVP's just don't come from teams in third place in their own division.

Nofishfisherman--The system has been broke for as long as the fans have been voting. To their credit they get most of the players right but some are obvious popularity contest winners. There has to be a better way. If Selig is going to continue to give the All-Star victor World Series home field advantage then someone other than the fans should determine who goes.

Agreed, if a guy is a big name player he will be an allstar, so many great players that are not big names yet get overlooked.

Like I said, it can happen for a player not on the top team to win the MVP but it sure isn't the norm. You had to go back 15 years to find 2.

Both of these players were also in the middle of their career and had established themselves as great players. A-rod has been refered to as the best player in baseball for years.

I just think that Mauer has to overcome alot to become MVP this year. He is on a small market team that is not even in a playoff race right now. He is a young player who hasn't proven himself over a few years yet, and besides his average none of his other stats are jumping out at me as MVP type numbers.

It pains me to say it but I think he will be overlooked this year unless he either hits near .400 for the year or if some of the other top players get hurt.

OBP - .458, best in the league and one of if not the most important stats in baseball.

As of tonight Joe Mauer leads all major league catchers in hits, batting average, doubles, runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Guys,

I have to agree 100%. I am tired of seeing Boston and NY players who are not even in the top 3 of their positions continue to get into the game. Until the last few years, I just kind of blew it off but now that it matters (home field) I think that the voting by the fans should be eliminated. It is a joke when the World Champs don't have a player in the top 2 spots at any division and the Mauer thing is criminal. I am just thankful that Ozzie has the power to get some of our guys in there who do deserve to be there. I is just evening the field and continuing a trend that has been going for several years. Tomorrow should be interesting. Ozzie does have a vested interest in winning the game so I can guarantee that Big Bad Bobby Jenks will be in Ozzie's holster when the game is on the line with his 100 MPH fastball and his "uncle charley" that is just filthy after seeing a 100 mph pea for a few pitches. I guess we will have to wait till tomorrow and see. Windy

Although it was AJ that got the Sox the title (just ask LA) last yr, Ozzie and the Sox are cursed as being a good all around "team", so if it is really an allstar game and not a game where the champs play the other league's allstars, Ozzie has got to take Thome with Jenks and Mauer.

Best signing for sure last season. Williams for GM of the year?

Geno,

Agreed, though I think JD might get some consideration too.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
