My buddy and I were out on the pond Sat night when the storms blew in and the lightning was incredible. I have a question for all the guys that stayed out through the whole storm including about 7 launch boats that I could see. Is lightning made out to sound more dangerous to boaters than it really is? Those launch boats have big antennas sticking 15-20 feet off the water. You would think they would be the first to get hit. I seen a couple bolts of lightning hit the big hill by Garrison that rocked my eardrums. Our fishing rods were also sparking, that was enough for us. We pulled our boat up on the beach in front of the Blue Goose and waited it out. We couldn't believe all the people that stayed out there, it was really bad for an hour or so.

You did the right thing. Ignorance of lightning or ingoring lightning will eventually kill you. If you see the lightning bolt or hear the thunder, the next one could hit you. I take no chances with it. I'd much rather cut short a fishing outing and live to fish again.

MY DAD AND i WERE OUT ON THE "BOOT" SAT. UNTIL DARK AND THE STORMS ALL STAYED ON SHORE. WE NEVER GOT ANY RAIN OUT ON THE LAKE, BUT AS SOON AS WE GOT OFF IT WAS POURING RAIN. confused.gif

It's incredibly stupid to stay out on the lake with lightning, especially a lake the size of Mille Lacs. If you're out in the middle you're the tallest object holding a conductive graphite rod, making you the path of least resistance right into the lake.

We were out too,on the far south end. Anytime we saw a front moving towards us, we went in to shore and let everything pass over, changed clothes, and went back out. Did this twice. We did really well in the first 20 minutes after each time back out. We didn't take no chances on death.
