The eyes were good on Redgutbay last week. They have moved out on the edges of the shelves, 20 to 25 feet. We fished three days and had no trouble getting our slot fish, plus lots of larger eyes, the largest nine #'s, plus a 8# smallmouth and several large snakes. We were cranking with shadraps, long line and two 1 OZ inline weights.

J.C.R.,

IF YOU CAUGHT A 8 LB. SMALLIE, I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE IT BROUGHT INTO THE M.N.R., AS YOU MAY HAVE BEEN IN THE RECORD BOOKS FOR RAINY. YOU SHOULD GIVE AL LINDNER A CALL, HE MAY PAY YOU BIG BUCKS TO SHOW HIM AROUND.

SINCERELY,

FISHMEISTER

I weighed it on a scale I had in the boat. Granted it is not a very accurate scale. However it was a very large smallmouth. Although we have caught several, almost as big while cranking for eyes last year. If you don't believe this would you believe my wife caught a medium size smallmouth and a slot walleye at the same time. One was on the front hook and the other on the rear hook of a shadrap.

I have had it happen once, fishing bass, so I would believe the bass and eye on one rap. I have also had bass hit my lure, and my dads lure at the same time, so we were fighting the same fish. I also believe there is great potential for large smallies to roam in Rainy also. UP to this date the largest I have heard of went 6 lb. 2 oz. on a certified scale. That would make your smallie the largest I have heard of.

grin.gif Reguardless of the actual weight we get the point that it is a HUGE smallie and I congratulate you on such a beautiful fish! grin.gif

My grandson caught the fish and so naturally I gave him the benefit of interpeting on my scale, which is not very accurate anyway. However when I checked the records, this would have tied the Minnesota record. It probably wasn't that big. However it will always be 8 LBs to him. The Ontario record is 9.84 lbs.

When I read an 8 lb. smallie I just about you know what! I got a 6 lber and thought about getting a replica, but an 8 would be no question. Rainy gets some pigs in it that's for sure, and I'd bet there's more than one that goes 8 or more pounds. Did you get length? Congrats on the fish, sounds like you had a blast!

Sorry didn't measure the fish. We've caught probably a dozen large smallmouths while cranking for eyes on the shelfs the last few years. This one was clearly the largest however. My sons catch lots of smallmouths around the island, off the rocks, but never any large ones like this. Apparently the larger fish hang out farther out and in deeper water. At least this time of the year.
