Wow...I know I haven't done alot of fishing this spring...(too busy)...but I didn't think I was that out of practice! I spent quite a bit of time on the water this week end b/t Montie and elk river--slow slow slow. Didn't get skunked by any means, but no hogs, largest was 17. Anyoone els have similar luck, or is it just me and my presentations???? (actually tried quite a few things)

That's just how it's been this spring.. SLOW! Similar results farther north for me. No big fish and slow fishing all around.

Posted

For sure not as hot as last 2 years. We got spoiled! Still out there just gotta work harder at it I guess.

Well, I can give the same report.

Lots of hours with small results.

Nothing going at all, and no real pattern. Very confusing. confused.gif

Was out a couple times this weekend and fishing flat out stinks.... Its the first time in my life I was wishing I was on one of the area lakes catching greenies.... confused.gif

I will have to concure. Over the past few years 50 fish days were the norm with many in the 17-20" class. Earlier in the year was having 20 fish days but last couple of weeks very slow with 5-10 being the norm and 15-17 class.

The ones we have found recently have been in the wood and hitting top water and senkos or my new river favorite the x-rap

I agree it is slower than normal. But one other problem I am having is I am finding that I get more bites on tubes than other baits, the trouble is, I miss way more fish with this style of fishing than other ways. Do you guys have the same trouble or am I just missing something? (besides fish) I try to hook weedless. Is there a better way or a different kind of hook I should be using? I have been using the owners with the weight that hangs from the eye.

Posted

Whats the reason you hook weedless in the river????

I rarely do weedless, unless I am working wood areas. Otherwise, I always expose the hook to some degree. No weeds to worry about in the river in 99.9% of the water.

Here's my two cents! I think the brown fish are getting a lot more pressure now then ever. The bigger fish are wising up. No one to blame but ourselves. Take a break and go beat up on the green fish.

Oh, one other thing. Do any of you think all the darn "tournies" are hurting the fish? And one other thing. I hate jet boats. Used to be us old river rats who took the time to learn the river had all the skinny water to ourselves. Now all the yahoos with the bucks to buy them are racing up and down the river at will. ARghhhhhhhhh.

Have a great day. Hey, go fishing.

Where are all the "darn tournies" you talk about?

Anoka has one all year. Thats the only tournament from the St Cloud dam down to the Coon Rapids dam.

There are no tournaments between the Sartell dam and the St Cloud dam.

And I only know of one tournament from the Royalton dam to the Sartell dam.

It aint tournaments effecting anything.

As far as jet boats being bad. What do you think the guys in canoes thought when they saw the first outboards coming across the lakes to their secret spots?

Probably the same thing you think now about jet boats going where only you could go before.

Carefull blb, we don't want you to have to ban yourself wink.gif. I leave the hook exposed also when tube fishing. I seem to loose about the same as I did with weedless because of the rocks and a plain hook is a lot cheaper.

Hey Old Guy, er, Old Guide, jealousy will get you nowhere in life. Open up and let the love of jesus free your negative mind and allow you to make peace with your bad deeds.

Hey oldguide, your post is like that "small town" attitude where once you move in you want to "close the gate"

so no one else moves in and wrecks your small town atmosphere. I hope you are still fishing with a cane pole and not using any of those fancy spinning type reels.

I agree with BLB I do not know of any other tournies on the river stretch he mentioned.

As for the fishing this year, we are looking at why we call it fishing and not catching. Trust me the fish are still there. I thought last year was a great year where we caught large quantities and lots of quality fish. Well I do not think that between September and now they got fished out (actually they were still there in Feb lol). Food sources, water temp, water levels, weather cycles all contibute to many variables that can affect the bite (yes even on smallmouth). I have lived on this Mississippi for 18 years by Big Lake and no doubt have seen more boats and fishing done. Guess what, I was one of the first guys that regularly ran an outbopard jet up here that I saw on a regular basis and it was nt no big money rig either.

Well, it is not my river it belongs to the public and you still have to learn it to effectively fish it no matter what boat you drive.

Also, most of the river rats I know are dedicated CPR guys who have a strong sense of repect for the resouce.

The fish are still there and I will continue to chase them and when they turn back on "whoopee".

My .02 worth for an 18 year river rat who feels the good old days are right now.

Well according to oldguide's definition ..... I must be a yahoo too... Saving for six years to get into a River-Pro boat. yep I guess I am a yahoo.... But, I love the river, will do my best to preserve the resource and will treasure the beauty I see. wink.gif

BTW your local Conservation Officiers also have those darn jet boats to make sure folks are staying in line...... ooo.gifwink.gif

Oldguide - I know it's just your $.02, but it doesn't really add up. Like BLB said, there are only a couple tournaments from Anoka to the head waters every year. And as Jetman said, the fish are still there - just ask the DNR who electroshocks them...they're still there. I think the slow fishing has more to do with the VERY warm weather and VERY low water levels we've been seeing this spring/early summer more than anything. Yes there is more jet rigs on the river and we've all wished at some point that we could have the river to ourselves like it used to be, but DNR reports have shown that the river is as healthy now as it ever has been.

I think we need to be thankful that we have a great resource in our backyards rather than spiteful over the fact that some other joe gets to enjoy what we've be able to enjoy all along.

Old guide I take real offense to that, almost all the "jetboaters" I know, know the river better than almost anyone with a prop, most of us spent years on this river without our fancy jetboats wading and plunking around with outboards. I have fished this river since I was about 5 and have fished small mouth since 88-89 when the river was low enough you could wade anywhere and not get your shorts wet. I also know for a fact that 99% of jetboaters on this stretch of river worked real hard scraping every penny they had to buy there jetboats, and we also try and respect the other forms of transportation that are out there on the river, when I can I always come off plane for another craft and try and idle buy (when the rivers not wide enough to stay away from em) or take the real skinny water route to avoid other craft. The "rotten" fishing I think is due to abnormally warm water temps earlier and the river droppping so fast spreading out the fish. The yoy hatch was also excellent (from what I can see) leaving a ton of forage out there, and letting the fish take there pick of what they want. The fish are definetley there and weren't killed off by "phantom" tournaments that dont exist in c&r waters! Hopefully in a couple of weeks when things stabilize we will see better fishing, until then I am still fishing the river Im just trying to fish different areas each time out and explore as much as I can!

My 2 cents. I know at least 8 people with jets, from OB's to RP's, I have NEVER, I repeat NEVER seen or heard of ANY of them keeping a Smallie, and know for a fact that most Walleyes even go back in the creek, they won't admit to catching them. blush.gifblush.gifblush.gif, I think it's an ego thing. wink.gifwink.gifwink.gif Every one of these guys has a camera and a measuring stick of some kind and ALL the fish go back in the river. laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

Smallies ain't no good to eat anyway. smirk.gifsmirk.gifsmirk.gif

I know the rum is hard to run a boat on but boy we have been getting some walleyes over in cambridge and lots of bass nothing huge but 14-19 walleyes for the most part and bass ranging from 5 inches to 18 no pigs yet but they will come to us.

I'm just a baby yahooooo wink.gif.I agree with BM that this water level never being level for long this year and so low may be a factor. It's been like a yoyo! The water cleared up a bit here since Sunday and the bite was great tonight. The fish are there.

I'm talking about all the local night leagues, etc. Hey I'm cool with everyone having there day on the river but lets go out and have some fun fishing!

Posted

man with all the $0.02 added up we probably can buy everyone a riverpro

Posted

I'm confused; old guide is now seemingly "OK" with everyone having "there" day on the river. He next uses the term "but", which is a contradictory term, and concludes with lets have fun fishing (paraphrased).

Is this simply bad editing? Does "everyone" include even us terrible jet boating yahoos, whom he apparently has never met before condemnation? Perhaps an explantion is in order from Old Guide. Is the first part of the post the contradiction, or the latter?

Holy COW....even "BULL" !!! Just wanted to know what kind of 'luck' people were having, via canoe, wading, RP, OBJ....guess I got my answer..... Doesn't sound like the problem is my 'presentation', which was my original question.....but I also don't think it is the use of my "jet boat" either...:) Deffinately not a $$$ RP...but a low-dollar, way south MO second hander OBJ...:) But hey..it floats....usually!

I haven't caught any 18-19"s this year, but I've had plenty of 30 fish days.

The fish are not exactly where I expect them...but I'm basing my expectations on last year.

It's one of fishing's biggest assets/detriments: memory

The topwater was spectacular last year...not so much this year.

Last year I caught 'em on the tip of each break...this year they seem to be farther downstream of said break.

I'm still catching smallmouth and it's still fun, but I'm definately sticking to the stretch I know and I'm also making sure I'm on the water when my preferred pattern is on.

Last year's patterns still work...the key is to be on the water when it's clicking...not at Cabela's...

Posted

Cabelas does have some pretty nice size fish in their tanks, you could catch your first 19" of the year wink.gif
