Warrior, you missed a perfect day!! Mostly sunny, light winds and a decent bite. One of the FM guys was out early on a good bite including a 30 incher. Jeff did his usual awesome job with the fish frying with smoky beans, slaw and a delicious taco salad on the side. Even a few brews consumed. Special thanks to Kaz again for his gracious hosting (and for the day spent in his Sportcraft). All in all, a great time.

I thought the fish was delicious. That is quite a complement too coming from a non-fish eater, one who has only eaten fish twice in the last 25 or so years. (prior to that it was force fed against my will-with tons of ketchup). The walleye cookies were a good as well as the duck/goose sausages and everyting else. Now i can say i have eaten duck. Tasted like some kind of deer sausage. Wasnt brave enough to try the Alaskan salmon but now i wish i have. I am sure that doesnt come around too often. What i really long to taste is some moose meat(without havin to go out and shoot one), preferably a moose burger. Mabey one of these days.

WalleyeChar and I had the pleasure of fishing with Curt Q. We tried a little jig/slip bobber fishing in deeper water with only a couple bites. We headed out to fish around some rock piles, and the first fish we "caught" was a floating half dead 24 incher in the net. We tried to revive the poor fella in the livewell, but it was too late, so the pelicans and gulls had quite the breakfast. We drifted off the edge of the rock pile, and Char boated our first fish, a perfect eater at 18.5". Caught a couple more drifting including Curt's 20.5". The boats anchored on the rocks were catching lots of little fish, and the drift bite wasn't fast and furious, so we decided to pull cranks over to the next rock pile that had no boats on it. Curt set his two riggers, and we long lined a deep running crank on the third line. No sooner did we head out, and the long line rod, bent nearly in half. After a bit of a fight, we boated a really round, almost black colored, 25" fattie. Naturally the only camera we had was a three year disposable that Curt had in the glove box for three years......I hope the pics turn out. Each rigger produced a decent eater after that, but again, the numbers weren't what we had hoped. We then headed over to the Knights Island area, and drifted over a couple rock piles, managing to boat one fish, losing several, and fighting a couple snags. Since all are bites were coming in between to rock piles, we tossed the anchor and tried some jigging, picking up two more (one keeper/too small). I managaed to lose three jigs in the matter of a half an hour sitting there. I wish I had a camera to see what the heck was going on. The fish there didn't seem to be very active either, so we pulled anchor......after we tried to move the boat, ooops, and headed toward the Graceton area to pull more cranks. I had an eighteen inch steel leaded on the long line rod, so I put on a little smaller Reef Runner, and a one ounce clip on bell sinker above the leader. Kind of an experiment just to see what would happen. Wouldn't you know it, that rod caught four fish after that, a pleasant surprise. The riggers caught a few more to, including the matched pair of 13.5 saugers we had been dragging around for God knows how long. That's right, we were packing up to head in and both riggers had fish on them when we reeled them up. We ended up cleaning eleven fish, had the two bigger throw backs, a few smaller fish, so all in all, a pretty nice day of fishing. Throw in the company of the fellow FMers, the nice weather, and awesome feast afterwards, and it was as close to heaven as you can get. A huge thanks to everyone who was able to attend. Cudos to Kaz for his gracious hospitality, and SXViper for hauling that awesome Lund up here for us to check out. In addition to Viper and his lovely wife, I had the pleasure of meeting a few more folks for the first time. Scarface, srj,Mrs.srj, and icemiester, I had a blast, and I'm sure we'll be wetting a line together in the near future. We certainly did "Have More Fun" than most.

It was a real fun day on the water with the Walleye's

Jon and Char. The weather was perfect and company couldnt

be beat. The fish bit good pretty good and they bit on

pretty much everything we put out there.

Met some good new people again this year, the Viper family

and Icemiester 71 and it was good to see the FMers I already

knew again.

Thanks to Jeff Beckwith for cooking the fish perfect again

this year. Jeff has been so busy making tackle at Scenic

Tackle that he boated his first Walleye of the season on

Saturday (too big to keep if I remember right). Kaz is the

best! Lets us have the fish fry in his yard and big steel

building it really works out very well.

One of the many cool things about these Get Togethers is

that it is pot luck, everyone brought something and we wound

up with everything we needed.

Next summers Get Together will more than likely be in the

campground at Warroad. It is a very nice facility and the

City of Warroad is very helpful in our planning. Without

even looking at a calendar I will venture the 3rd Saturday

in June, or the Saturday after Fathers Day as a good bet for

the day. We promised we would move back and forth so next

year will probably be Warroad.

You missed a good one if you werent there. Hopefully we will meet next year.

One more thing, I want to thank my Wife for making Walleye

Cookies. She not only made the cookies, she also had to

make the cookie cutter to make "Walleye" cookies and Walleye

Chocolates and Minnesota Chocolates too. It was a nice

thing she did I thought.

See you next year!

Thanks Curt for setting this up and thank you to Kaz for providing the place to have it.

Yes we did have a great time. It is always good to see the people that are there each year and always nice to meet the new ones as well. The pot luck is always fun and good food there as always. Those chocolate fishes that Curt’s wife made were just about addicting!!

Hello Folks,

Sorry it took me so long to post, but this is the first time I sat down at the computer long enough to post. I wanted to tell everyone that Dawn and I had a blast at the get-together. Everyone there was wonderful, very fun to finally put some faces to the names. I am already hoping that I will be able to make it to next years event. I hope it is out of Warroad, as I have never fished that part of the lake. Kaz I wanted to thank you for extending such warm hospitality to all of us and allowing us gather at your place. Thanks to everyone for making it a great time. I was thinking of maybe getting a few Lund hats to give away at next years get-together, if that is alright with everyone. grin.gif

Thanks,

Brian and Dawn

FISKYKNUT, If you could would you shoot me an e-mail at dbboyne at arvig dot net. I have a couple questions for you. Thanks

That was a better study compared to last winter when they setup the vertical tube nets and tried to release exhausted fish from being studied and expected them to be able to swim straight down a 3' hoop net.     That lake's crappie population from this latest video was pretty deep at 40-50', and no doubt from those depths that is barotrauma for most.  That is deeper than most crappie holes but certainly how some are. However from helping give fish a good release from the 35' and less range and tracking them with live sonar most of them swim at a shallow angle back to the depths and I watch them rejoin the school and be active.  Uncut Angling's video helped counter some of the initial narrow findings.

If you fished with me more often, you'd never have to make this statement...   38" of ice - love it. I'm really going to have to dig around for my auger extension. I don't think that I've needed it in over a decade.   Too bad nobody has a locomotive chugging across the ice to do some logging, like the good old days.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Resorts and outfitters on some parts of the lake have ice roads extending over 16 miles staying on nice schools of walleyes and saugers.  Many fish houses are over deep mud.  Some are on structure.  It is always fishing of course, but overall, February has been very productive for most anglers.   Extensions are being used on ice augers as the ice continues to thicken.  The thick ice this year will be good for the extended ice fishing season Lake of the Woods enjoys with fish houses out through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with a good number of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Some big eelpout are also showing up.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish frys and usually extra fish to bring home.   The one-two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.  On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.     Lures with a light have been working well in the stained water.  Please remember, in MN, lures with a light or water activated light can be used as long as the battery is mercury free and the hook is attached directly to the lure and not as a dropper line.     On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    Some days, mornings are better, other days, it's the afternoons.  There is no distinct pattern, they could come through at any time. On the Rainy River...  The start of the day and end of the day have been best for those targeting walleyes on the river. A jig and minnow or a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Some big sturgeon being iced by ice anglers targeting them.  It is a catch-and-release sturgeon season currently.   Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing has been strong in the islands area of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move their fish houses around, staying on the best schools of walleyes.     Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, and jumbo perch with an occasional pike or tullibee as well.     Big crappies are still being caught just over the border.  Fish houses are available, check with a NW Angle resort for info on crappie fishing.   Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
