Trying to get a last minute weekend trip to Ely set up.

Parents, 16yo, 14yo, 11yo. 5 kayaks.

We aren't picky about where we stay. The more rustic the better. Paid camp grounds or just an island on a lake.

Any ideas??????? confused.gifconfused.gif

TC, the new Fall Lake Campground on Fall Lake is huge, and may be a good option for you. Go east through Ely on 169 and it's a few miles out after 169 becomes Fernberg Road. It's on the left and is marked with big signs. The phone number is 365-2963. They use a fax on the same line, so sometimes you can't get through if they're faxing. You can call there to check on whether they have openings. Some sites can be reserved, but they leave a lot open so it's first-come-first-served for the last minute needs.

Also out the Fernberg, Canoe Country Outfitters on Moose Lake Road has a campground that FMers have used before. Their number is 365-4046.

Otherwise, the Ely Chamber of Commerice is 365-6123. They are in the business of setting people up and telling them about campgrounds and other lodgings. But you'd have to call them by this afternoon. They're closed on weekends.

You might also call Shig-Wak resort on Little Long Lake a few miles out the Echo Trail. They are good people and usually have a few cabins open, which isn't camping but wil still get you up here. Ask for Linda or Dick and say Steve Foss recommended you try them, so that will give you a local connection. Not that you need one. They are nice people. They're at 365-5285.

Good luck!

TC: Try Big Lake on the echo trail. Good walleye lake and some-what remote. Islands out there have rustic campsites.(fire-ring, some log tables) There are also two resorts located here for last minute items, extra bait.

Not alot of boat traffic giving waves, so should be ideal for kayaks!!

A favorite spot of ours is right thru the narrows to your right.(also in prime fishing spots)

SnowBank is a great lake for the Kayak types. In the areas outside the BWCA there are many Island camps that are USFS owned & legal to camp on. They will have fire rings & tent sites, but no biffys or fire grates, so if you go plan for these ammenities. You could day paddle into the BW area on Snowbank & explore that clear, deep, beautiful lake for a weekend & leave wanting more! laugh.gif

Good Smallie, Pike & eye fishing there. Lakers too.
