More problems...

Question

Posted

Hey everybody. Here I am again looking for some more help. confused.gif

My 1984 25 horse Johnson tiller started acting goofy last night. It starts and runs great. Planes out and runs for about a mile or two then starts to wind down and wind up with the throttle. Hard to explain I guess but the closest explanation I can make is, have you ever heard someones lawn mowers rpms go up and down while mowing. Like a governor spring issue? I don't know if that's it or not on my outboard, but it's the best description I can use. Hard to make sounds come out in writing. But anyway, the vent cap is loose and the bulb is firm. I know it's a shot in the dark, but anybody have an idea on something I can check out?

your problem souds very framiilar to me......what im asking is does it sort of bog up and down? and does it appear to lose a bit or power as it bogs down?? If this is the case its a dirty carburator. both of the motors ive ever had both johnsons have expereienced this. You can opt to do it yourself or take it to the shop. simply take the throat of the carb apart and with fuel line hooked to the motor squirt some fresh gas through there and let it run onto the ground. look around real good and make sure theres no carbon or gunky build up or residues anywhere and put it back togther. If that dosent solve your problem you can check your fuel filter and clean that, or If nothing else make sure your connection on the fuel line are solid to the tank, ball and motor, if the hose is stiff or rock hard, replace it. This is especailly true if you run that attwood brand fuel line. I think it is S***. Your beter off picking up a automotive fule line of the right size and the ends and ball and clamps and making your own fuel line. If all else fails take it to the shop and your probelm shouldn't run you more than 100 bucks.

Yse sir! That's what its doing, bogs down and revs back up and then down again. Over and over it does that. Thanks for the advice man. Appreciate it for sure!

Something else to try is check to see if the choke linkage is connected.

I'll take a look at that tonight. See if it's in good working order. Thanks Frank!

It could be that the tank is not getting vented. Open the gas cap to let air in and see it that helps.

Dan,

I would just go buy another gas tank. We had the same problem happen to us when we were in Canada a few years ago. Our 40 horse Johnson would rev up and down and then shut down.

So we bought another gas tank, fuel line, and connector.

Considering the hassle this can bring on the water, this is a small price to pay to try and fix it.

good luck!
