Will be up with my 11 yr old son on this coming sunday. Super black has truly put the pressure on for this dad !! Fished rainy 3 times out of Island view, but always in the fall. Always done well with walleye on jigs and lindys, but not to familiar with the bottom bouncing techniques. We will be camping in the park. I read a post from someone stating that if you can't find a site that you can camp anywhere in the park. Seems to good to be true. Any help to that question would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to pulling into The One Stop for my license and gear. tight lines!!

You can camp anywhere in the park as long as you're far enough away from a dedicated site (I think it's 200 yards from the fire ring) and within a 100' of the shoreline. Here's the link to the regs. Page 10 and 11.

However, if you camp outside a designated site you have to hang your food in a tree like you do in the BWCA. The designated sites have a bear locker, usually a picnic table, tent pads, and often a toilet. I also think there's a rule about not having a fire unless it's in a designated fire ring. So, you're supposed to limit fire to a portable stove if you're in an "at large" or non-designated site. I wouldn't recomend straying from the designated sites unless absolutley necessary for your first trip. You'll also notice that the park doesn't make it widely known that you can camp anywhere in the park, I don't think it's encouraged.

Exactly right. The main thing if you HAVE TO camp at an undesignated site is keep your food and garbage up off the ground. Once a bear knows he can get a free meal, he will not leave. I think you should be able to find a campsite, not many times I've been out for work when EVERY campsite is full. Have a great trip, fishing has been excellent!

Definately true, keep that food away from the bears. We had a visitor once in the boundary waters, and it made life interesting for awhile. As for the bottom bouncing, it is just a rig used to keep bait off the bottom. It has a sort of wire bottom that keeps the actual weight off of the rocks to reduce snags.

Fishing has been good, you will have a great time!
