Heading up to Sag for my first summer fishing experience up there. Have winter fished for lakers many times, but this will be my first trip up there for walleyes and smallies. Is anyone willing to give me some advice regarding tactics and locations? Not looking for any honey holes, just would like some good advice regarding where to get started and what rigs typically work in the early July timeframe.

Thanks, D

From everything I've heard so far, they're still having trouble catching walleyes. Everything else seems normal.

Try and target smallies only then maybe you will catch walleyes. Bring lots a beer and your love for BASS.

Spinnerbaits, plastics, ? whats the weapon of choice up there for smallies??

I've fished Sag many times in June and July. For walleyes I fish 6-9:00 pm or later. Leeches on slip bobbers on reefs or sloping rocky shorelines have always worked well. Recently I have used Husky Jerks and fished mid lake reefs and shelves at night and done well also.

The smallies will hit the surface now and that's a real blast!! Try #9 and 11 Rapala floating baits. Spinnerbaits in yellow and white have been working. Seems the smaller type of single blade has worked better for me.

Good luck!! It's a great lake to fish.

The smallies will hit just about anything. I like raps in crawfish colors and tube jigs of the same color. We like to vertical jig in 10 to 20 feet of water. leeches on some glow colored jig color seems not to matter. We also slip boober with leeches also. i like sharp drops near islands where the wind has been blowing against, or on top of the reefs.

I just returned from being up there and the smallmouth bite is going strong. Caught a few very nice ones off the rocks around islands along some of the steeper breaks. Managed a few walleye as well in these locations and suspended over 22 feet of water. I threw a lot of stuff those few days, but the most consistent color bar none was white. A white "ghost" rapala was the best for walleye and big smallies. Good luck!

P.S. Are you fishing the motorized or non-motorized portion? Send me an e-mail and I'll give you a few good campsites to try out if you wish.
