How's the fishing been?

Posted

was out last weekend on sat in the rain and caught a few small walleye, pike and bluegills on a small bar south of the big bar. slip bobbering leeches in 7-10 feet. was on the pontoon and the rain didn't help.

Posted

Do you mean the big bar at the north east end of the lake?

Posted

i associate the big bar with the buoys, just like the big island. the first bar you come to from the access. just 100 yards from it to the south is a long finger that tops out at around 3'. the edges of it when the weeds are in full bloom are great for multi-species bobber fishing.

Yup - a great place. Ther are probably 5 or 6 different sunken islands on that lake, as well as a bunch of good shoreline, that hold walleyes on the weedline all summer long. Had best luck once things get set up - had my best days in hot, calm weather right on the 8' - 10' weed edges, rigging with a white corkie and a crawler - moved to leeches when the perch and sunnies got too ambitious.

Wind makes a big difference on the lake, and the active schools of walleyes seem to change locations from year to year. Still in the 8' - 10' range on weedlines, but in different places. Guess I'm saying last year's hotspots may not necessarily be this year's hot spots.

From mid-July through mid-September, trolling #5 and #7 silver and perch Shad Raps, unweighted, in the evening also produced well. Had a few very productive booze cruises in and around the deep water holes in the lake. Thermocline sets up around 20' - the fish are in open water above that depth - watch your graph, you'll see them.

Onward!

9 inch walleyes are every where. So are 9 inch crappies. But so are a few 9 inch gills. All in 9 feet of water.

Posted

you know, that's so true about the wind up there, even for being a smaller lake. i've always know about the weed bite up there, but have fallen prey to routine over probability more times than not.

i have yet to really dial in the crank baits up there, as much as i fish cranks on mille lacs and other open water. i get to pulling cranks and no sooner do you get on a good line, you have to turn to avoid structure.

i wonder if a devils lake approach to casting those number 5 and 7's wouldn't work???

todd, what are you seeing this season as far as the crappies go? i plan on being up much more this summer and fall, though i think i'll be reduced to getting my old green crestliner running again!

Trent.

The crappies are every where. by the bouys, the small bar 83walleye mentioned. Off my dock and every shorline break near the weed line. Running about 9 inches with a 10 incher in the mix at times. They are running smaller. But very numerous. I have had more 9 inch walleyes than I ever recall and not many are reporting any size to any walleyes.

I have two crank baits but have been getting northerns. I got one small walleye off my dock.

And I get what ever walleyes of the weed edge fishing crappies. August has been my most successful month if I am going to get a walleye.

Have you got any keepers this year. ?

Posted

Did the DNR stock a bunch of fingerlings last year - seems to me that, in the past, a year or two after the stocking the walleyes were big enough to keep. Lake survey will tell - I should check that I guess.

Ah-ha - 19000 fingerlings in 2004 - these are the 9 inchers you're seeing this summer. Last stocking before that was in 1999 - 19000 fingerlings again. This lake responds well to the stockings - 2007 should be a good year for walleyes - they'll be perfect crispers by then!!

Posted

well, that makes perfect sense that gun is such a good weed bite lake. fingerlings are reared in a weedy pond, so when they're put into new habitat, the look for familiar surroundings.

i have not got any keepers yet this year, as the early part of the season i was preparing for tournaments. i didn't even open on gun this year, first time in ten years i bet.

i've planned on being up there at least two weekends a month for the rest of the season, we'll see how that goes!

if memory serves, august has been good for crappies up there, too. the rock point on the north west side of the first island. from august through september, i've caught good fish on minnows and jigs.

Posted

Trent what do you consider the first island the south, middle or north island.

Posted

the south, or first one you come to from the access.

Posted

We call them 1st, 2nd and 3rd island going from south to north.

Posted

is there rocks that run off the point on the first one or is it sand all the way out off the weeds on the north west corner.

Posted

It's an underwater point that goes just about straight west off the NW corner of the 1st island - kind of a finger-shaped point - 5' on top and drops to 20' or so on the three sides away from the island itself. When the wind is coming into this finger, it's a great slip-bobber spot - set your knot at about 7', cast upwind into deeper water and let the wind carry it up on the point. Careful where you anchor - try to stay in the 15' - 20' stuff and cast into the good water. The harder the wind, the more aggressive they'll be...leeches have worked better than minnows here, although we did get a nice mess of crappies on minnows one time...Just north of this point(50 yds)is a big sunken island we call the "football"(it's shaped like one). Again, backtroll the windy weedline of it for 'eyes. One of many spots on the Gun Lake trapline...

It might be a little busier on Gun this weekend...Gun made

the McGregor area lakes fishing report that the northern

are biting. This kind of report sometimes draws heavier

crowds.

Posted

Holiday weekends are busy - and the fish bite news - well, just have to go with the flow, I guess. Let's hope people keep some of those northerns they are catching - lots of small ones around.

Anyone ever consistently catch fish at the far end of the lake - across the long 3' bar towards all the rice? I saw a guy catch a walleye on top of that bar once - casting a spinnerbait no less!

Posted

I know where your talking about. I have fished pretty much every inch of shorline and hump and valley of the lake.

What I think is unusual is how much press the lake gets here while it really has become mediocre. Its an alright lake but its not the best one in a 13 mile radius.

83 walleye, where on the lake did you used to be.?

The very 1st time I ever fished the lake was during the winter back when Gun was in outdoor news with the picture of the two political dudes from St paul and a mess of huge gills and crappies. It was through that Outdoor news article that began the down fall of the lakes pan fish and crappie size. I have been on the lake for going on 16 years this week.

I fish it pretty much for crappies and gills. run into northerns grabbing crappies. Walleyes are the bonus that show up now and then.

It s fun lake. But not what it once was.

Posted

I have fished Gun too and its a nice lake, I use to go there with the neighbors and friends and I wasn't to impressed on how the fish were biting but we still had a good time.

Crappie Todd your right more and more lakes keep on getting medicore it seems, like lakes you use to catch very nice crappies and bluegills/sunfish are now fished out of the big ones because of fishing pressure and people not releasing those big ones when they need to protect the beds or when they are spawning. Now you might catch big fella every now and then but I am talking about catching 3/4 to 1 lb bluegills (9-11 inches) or crappies 1.5 to 2 lbs. (13-16 inches) constantly like you could before on smaller lakes, just not on Red Lake. But lake shore development is to blame as well because people building their cabins or I should say 2nd homes so they can have a piece of lakeshore property is also damaging to the lake and wetlands, because most people clean out the weeds and cattails that were on their property so they can see the lake....now I believe you can't do that now besides making a path for your boat and dock but even though the damage had been done before they made a law about the destruction of shoreline. Because that does take away spawing grounds for panfish as well. I would also say Todd your right about the Outdoor News magazine, it can be helpful and useful information to see where the action is, but some baitshops and even the magazine dont care if they leak a hot bite on a small lake like Gun. I have seen it on lakes near Bemidji where baitshops have leaked out a hot bite on sunfish or crappies and BAM everyone goes there, drills a thousand holes or there is 25 boats in a 30 yard radius right in the spot where the fish are biting. And you wonder why the DNR has to put slot limits, lowering daily posessions and I heard they are pondering on shutting off crappie and possibly bluegill fishing for the spring so they can get break and can spawn.

Out-laws had a cabin for 30 years on the northeast corner of the lake, first place on the right just after you get over that big 3' bar on the NE end. They sold it in 05 and I miss it alot - had many great fishing stories, and some great late season bluebill shoots out there.

Fishing pressure certainly pushed the average crappie size down over the years. Still caught some decent sunnies while trolling for walleyes, but they were incidental. I'd say that in the time I used the cabin(20 years), I bet I caught and released 20-30 eyes over 5lbs. Biggest was about 8 - did lose the biggest one right at the boat - how's that for an original fish story - LOL!! Fished out of a 16' khaki colored boat with a 40hp Mariner for just about ever.

Great lake with lots and lots of structure - I had a trapline of 20 or so spots to fish. Just started at the south end and worked my way back north - always ended up with enough for supper...east wind always made it tougher for fish, but the east wind was dynamite for those late-season 'bills...

83walleye are you talking of the Greens cabin. If you are we are a couple of cabins down from there and hung out with them a bit.

Posted

Indeed I am. I married(and am still married to) the youngest daughter - we live in Duluth. Kay passed away a month ago from cancer - tough to see her go.

Posted

yes i know that sad news and them letting the cabin go is also sad news. We are the Rikala cabin 2 doors down and my parents new Rich and Kay very well. I also always remeber you guys doing good walleye fishing on gun and other lakes in the area. You should fill me in on your secrets.

just a quick note on the mediocracy statements...

i know crappie todd has been down on the lakes quality lately, but we all need to remember that ecosystems are no different than the stock market, ups and downs.

three years ago on opener i couldn't land a walleye less than 18 inches, and they were jumping in the boat. two years ago, although weather related, we only boated two 15 inch fish.

so it goes in cycles, some years we see nice classes and some years we don't, but it will eventually come around.

we are fortunate to have a lake like gun, that generously gives up its fish, and is still so close to other great bodies.

just found out i have a work commitment on monday so will not be making it up this 4th, good luck to all and enjoy!

I was fishing the brown floating dock (the one north of Riklas) one time when this woman came out and said she was from Hollywood...

I recall many nice looking women at the Rikla's lake residence.

Some of the Rikla's fished the Gun Lake Crappie tournament too one year....

I also remember when one of the Riklas broke the boat lift for the speed boat...

Caught some walleyes... Nothing too brag about.

My son got paid back for a good deed he did several years ago. He found a couple of expensive items at a boat ramp and called me asking what he should do.   I told him to bring them home because I was afraid if someone else found them, they might keep them. It was winter and nobody was around. This was when Facebook wasn't really popular yet, I was on several sites like this. First thing we did was make a big sign and posted it at the boat launch, then I posted it on all the forums I was on. Long story short, we never found the owner, but we sure tried. I know to this day, if either one of us found something, we'd do our best to get it back to the rightful owner.

Yes, for sure.     A few years back, and unbeknownst to me, a piece of trim came off my sled while traveling over the lake.  A fellow sledder and complete stranger found the piece and followed my tracks all the way back to my cabin to return the lost item.  Couldn't thank him enough.  His kindness will never be forgotten and is something to which I aspire.

Sweet!!👍 there are still good people out there!

We got the auger back! The person who found it didn't want me to mention his name, we can't thank him enough! Still good, honest people around. He called Spring Bay Resort and asked if they heard of anyone losing an auger and they sent him a screenshot of my post. So, thanks to Dayis and Steve at Spring Bay Resort for that! Thanks again everyone for getting the auger back to us!

Who’s been out? I got hit with the flu and am still recovering.
    • CigarGuy
That's what they're going to do. I always read these posts and wondered how people could lose or forget stuff, well it happens!
    • Wanderer
Dang….  I know it’s your son, so kinda different, but I’d be expecting a replacement from those who lost it.  The group could each put in and wouldn’t hit one or another too bad.   But that’s just an old man’s thoughts….💭    Good luck.

So my son and buddies were out this morning fishing between Wakemup and H.O.L. Bays (probably between Metza's pt and Schmidt Island), so they had to cross the snowmobile trail to The Landing. Well,  MY Strikemaster 24 volt auger fell off the back of my sled.  They didn't realize it until they got back. If anyone found it, would be nice to get back...please and thank you. Good news is they had the battery in their pocket..... Dip $hits😡
