I bought a planer board the other day because I was takeing two other people out and it gets really crowded behind the boat. My question is how do I know when I got a bite? The other guys were catching fish and I just got to watch my board float along side the boat. We were useing shallow running cranks. Thanks for the help

You might also want to post this in the Equipment forum where you will probably get many responses.

A bite on a planer board can be tough to detect at first. If it is walleyes you are targeting the board will simply start to drop back some and/or start sliding towards the boat. It may also start to bob or bounce a bit. Most often bites can be seen easily when the fish actually strikes the lure.

When a white bass or sheepy hits a board it really starts bouncing and jerking the board. (Unless they are small of course)

Small fish can be almost impossible to detect without the help of tattle flags. Many times a large fish will pull the board under water much like a bobber!

The reason you may have not been getting bit on the board line is you generally want to let less line out behind the board. Why? Because the rod you are holding in the boat will be a few feet above the water and the the line on the board will be at the surface or slightly under. This will cause your baits to run at slightly different depths.

I would say I troll planer boards 90% of the time. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask!
