How's the fishing in Winona? What's biting and where?

Posted

My nephew and niece( 6 and 4 yrs old) are in town from NY and they are staying down in Winona for 2 weeks. They keep asking me to take them fishing but I am not familiar with fishing in Winona. Any suggestions? No boat so we would have to fish from the shore. I am sure they would be happy catching anything. Thanks for your help!

theres a couple small lakes right in town almost next to WSU campas, one on each side of the road, not sure what the names of these lakes are or whats in them but the grass always looks pretty well mowed around them and i would guess that theres at least some sunnys if not other fish in there as well, im sure someone from that area will give u a little better info but thats where i would start

I posted my reports from Lake Winona today and last night on the Mississppi pools 4-11 forum. The areators i was talking about are on teh hospital end of the lake, right next to the hospital is a fishing dock/pier where you can catch ample bluegills from shore(although many small ones, but the kids would like it) I'm sure you can catch bass, crappie, northern exc from teh pier also, as i can done so, but your best bet would be for panfish. Piece of crawler under a bobber should keep you busy baiting hooks. Hope this helps.

btw- Lake Winona is an excellent bass lake, they say you can fish is from shore but the shore line of this lake is very very weedy.

Like fishchaser said, ample sunnies on Lake Winona using small chunks of worms. Most are small to smaller size, but every once and a while you'll get a decent one (7"er). If you've got kids and just looking for action, that would be the place to go.

From what I've heard, the river has slowed considerably over the last week for most everything.

(Hey Ron....Whats your email? I've got a link that might help you)

Thanks!!! So, a little bit of worm and on the fishing pier near the hospital. The kids are going to be really excited.

Thanks again!
