I took a few pulls tonight (Sunday) with a buddy from work. We were only able to come up with a few shiners at the tot lot. I'm going to pass on Monday night and give it another try on Wednesday night.

See ya at the tot lot!!!

Take care,

Tom (BD110)

I went down to the Amnicon on Saturday night. We got two smelt in our first pull and it was still plenty light out, so we thought they were going to really be going. Smelted until 11 and didn't get another. Couple more and I could have had myself a cocktail, but oh well. The water temp at the mouth of the Brule was still 39.8 on Sunday morning. My guess is next weekend will be prime, and I get to go with the girlfriend an hour south of Madison for Easter. woohoo.

No smelting tonight boys. Strong/cold east wind is too much. 3' waves and CHILLY. Try Tot Lot Wed night.

I would've liked to give it a go tonight but I don't like the wind direction. Next day we have a light east wind I'll show up with the smelt.

Yea, I see it died down later on but it was been blowing hard off shore all day. That blows all the warm water out. I really think the next warm day with a E or NE wind the smelt will follow that water in.

I went out with my brother last night. Smelted from 915 till 11 and filled 1/2 of a five gallon bucket. Also netted a gorgeous lamphrey. That lamphrey will make for some good eating.

The most excitement we had was a muskrat in our net. I hear ya on the warm water blowing out Frank. We had that exact conversation last night. This weekend may be the start.

Use to do some dipping at the Stewart River (about 18 years ago). Is that a thing of the past? Would like to get some for the local Sportsman Club in Cleveland MN for a smelt fry. Is a minnow sein net the way to go now a days? Is the tot lot the public beach south of the lift bridge? Thanks

I have seen people dipping last year in the Lester, Sucker, and Talmadge.

Dip netting days are pretty much over these days. Not a big enough run for rivers to fill with any numbers. Seigning the points, MN. or WI., is the way to go these days.

Keep a eye out here we will keep ya all informed. Im guessing this weekend if the weather cooperates.

I have done very well in years past on the bay side. No they were not shiners they were smelt. Its been a good while since i have gotten any there. I miss the good old days of smelting. I have some great memories though. when the run was on they came in thick!

I just got out of the Hospital for an emergency surgery. I plan on coming down to the Tot Lot sometime in the next few days. I got all the gear if someone wants to use my seine net and buckets. If you don't have the gear but know how to smelt let me know and we could split the difference. You would need your own waders though. i most likely won't be able to smelt I'm on a strict restriction of lifting nothing more than 10 pounds for 4 weeks. Make sure you can find a buddy.

good news, the smelt are running. went out last night from 9 till 11 and picked up 9 gallons. Three people, one seign. It was super windy and hard to keep a fire going but they were running. Our last pull of the night was at about 10:45 and we got 3 gallons in one seignful. So I have enough, probably gonna go next week but now I'll keep the fire going and maybe sip some hot toddies while everyone else does the work.

I am willing to help someone pull at some point this weekend or early next week. I would like to get some of the tasty buggers and just need to know when people are going to be down there and where as well as if there are any guys that need someone on the other end of the seine. Keep me updated and let me know. Also just curious to see if anyone will be down on MN point tonight at perhaps the tot lot. I haven't had a whole lot of smelting experience so I am eager to learn.

William Wallace nice to have you on board. Welcome!

If your on Park Point dont get caught with a fire or beer on the beach you will get a ticket. Plus you may blow it for everyone. Bring a lantern or go to Wisc. Point if ya want a fire. Not being a A-hole just letting ya know the facts.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
