Catfish?

Recommended Posts

big musk411

I was thinking about heading out in search of some catfish tomorrow somewhere between Monti and Dayton. It appears that people are getting some cats on other parts of the river, has anyone been out up here? Is it too early? Any guidance would be gratly appreciated.

Thanks!

Musk

Assuming you're fishing from shore: I would stick to the west side/ south side of the river either in or near monti. The water is slightly warmer (like 10-20 degrees)due to the plant influence on that side. The water doesn't truly mix in (depending on flow) until nearly upstream of Elk River. I know some folks have had success downstream of Montissippi Park... All I can say is get fresh cutbait, it almost always works wonders up here.

Good luck.

If you going by boat email me (in profile) I'll get you on a spot or two I am familiar with. grin.gif

Thanks for the advice! I am heading out in a little bit and will post on the results. I think next weekend I will pull the boat out from starage, so I'll probably be sending you an email.

Went out yesterday and fished with fresh cut sucker. No fish! It seemed like one ripped the cut bait off my hook once, but it might have fallen off. Fished a variety of water. Will keep at it. Thinking about trying Coon Rapids Dam next.

I saw posts in the Catfish forum where some of the guys caught some Channels down in the city (still in Pool 1, though). Looked like they were using cut bait. See the "Channel Catfish in the Snow??" thread...

It is definitely getting down to the wire. I want to try and get out one more time if possible! I love ice fishing, but the fall bite has been hot.

Be careful on public land traps tend to disappear. Don’t set the traps in the open and make another path to check your traps. With duck season going on use traps that will not hold dogs. I like setting banks with mink attractor or 220’s set in rat runs.

Good pics have been hard to come by.  But...   Yes, these are water pics mainly but we’ve hunted fields too. The field hunting has been tough for us with the size of crew we have and the age mix.  Good times; good people.   Besides, a guy that likes divers needs a little water tossed in.  I saw my bucket list can but wouldn’t water swat him to claim him.  Didn’t get a chance at him on the wing.
