Otherwise I'll be heading back out Wed. thru Sunday next week or something close to that. If you guys make it out this weekend good luck.

LoonASea,

When you say long weekend do you mean that you are off on Monday? If you are and thinking about going out on Monday give a post and I'll try and meet up with you when I get off work.

Take care,

Tom (BD110)

Hey guys,

Ended up fishing the Sucker most of the day yesterday and a little shore fishing at the mouth. Got there about 4:45 am, my brother had two hook-ups early in the morning but we couldn't get them in. I on the other hand got nothing but a few miss strikes, ouch!! Saw about four or five landed and released EARLY in the morning. Otherwise, Shore fished a little but water clarity went down when the river finally cut loose at about 3:30 yesterday, never seen so much ice flying by is such a little time. Today was the same, the Sucker was flithy dirty we didn't draw any strikes. Once again saw a few landed. Most action seems to be in the stream itself with egg or yarn combo early in the morning. Gonna probably hit the lester this afternoon rain or no rain. I'll give a report after if I do anything worth reportin'. Good luck see ya out on the river

WalleyeGuy,

Which one were you down there? I was down for prolly an hour with a couple guys about 1 o'clock. I had on a red sweatshirt and was the one that crossed the river at the mouth looking like an idiot. It is good to hear that the river is finally open. If you are up for it we should hook up and get out there and try to hit them. I too have seen the same thing at the sucker. I have been there the last 2 days and have seen 3 fish landed. however I was out there last tuesday and limited in about 3 hours with 4 other fish hooked. The difference was that it was midweek and the water was clear. Hope to give another river a shot on tues.

Wall-i-king,

Ya I think I saw a guy in red down there. I agree that the amount of fishing pressure definitely effects the bite. When we first got down there on sat. morn, people were catching fish left and right, by sun. morn the bite had slowed and by afternoon seemed non-existent. My bro and I were the guys fishing closest to the lake but still in the stream(wearing tan and black carhardts). The lester didn't produce for me last night only saw one guy that false hooked about 3. I will also try to get out on tues. but I know I will hit it thurs. for sure. You plan on hittin the sucker again, boy it would be nice to see the water clarity rise a bit!! Good luck out there.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents. Went out for 3 hours this morning on the Lester. The water was down a good foot from Sunday evening and has improved in clarity. Saw 3 nice stealhead landed under the 61 bridge but no Loopers that I saw. Green yarn seemed to be the ticket.

Walleye Guy,

I have a lab early tomorrow that should be over by about 10 then I plan to head to a river. I will prolly start with the sucker and if I am feeling ambitious I might work my way a little farther up the shore. If any of you see a black ranger with a sunshield on the front that would be me meaning I am there somewhere. I will most likely be in a red sweatshirt and the one catching all the fish wink.gif

Walliking,

How did it go. I think I saw you in the red sweatshirt but it looked like you took off right away. i don't blame you hopefully you had more luck up the shore farther and less fisherman too. I had one guy land a nice looper right next to me on a green yarn fly. Other than that no action just some moron who decided he wanted to cross the stream so he walked right over my line, thanks buddy mad.gif. I am definitely getting sick of the crowds maybe I'll find a new joint farther up the shore on thursday. Got to get to work, GO TWINS!! Good Luck out there!

yeah that was me. I was there for maybe a half hour and then left. I heard there was nothing in there this morning. However that seemed to be a common theme today. I checked out the Stewart with no luck and then the Lester with the same result. I decided not to try the Knife it looked like it was flowing way too fast and was muddier than the rest of the rivers. So while it was a nice day to be out I didn't have any luck at all.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
