Cats- when?

Recommended Posts

lanyard

Started fishing cats last year, and am curious what time might be worth a go. Looks like the season is continuous, but wonder if it's a bit like targeting bass through the ice.

Those fish are a blast. Had some opportunity on the MN and Des Moines river- can't wait to give it another go.

Fish'n guy

lanyard,

The early to mid April period seems to be when the channels on the Minnesota start to wake up. It all depends on the river conditions. The flathead bite usually doesn't start to pick up until May. Again water levels and temps have the final say in the bite. The warmer and lower (not too low) the water the better!!! Hopefully the river will cooperate this year better than it did last year.

If you can find a warm water discharge somewhere you might run into a decent channel cat bite right now. Check out "Channel Catfish in the Snow??" post on the Catfish forum for some live proof of this!!!

GOOD FISHIN!!!!!

Blue Kayak

Caught my first channel cat in the MN River today (3/25/06). Pretty small, but maybe they'll start sooner rather than later.

Hopefully we get some active fish before we get too much rain. The river sure looks good right now. Might have to give er a shot later today.

I believe the hog hunting farm is called Ridge Hunting Preserve, it is east of Little Falls the phone number is 320-745-2337 I know people who have hunted up there in the past and had a good time. They said the hogs were running wild in a 20 or 40 acre fenced area but it is not usually easy to get one but there is a high success rate if you have the time to work the area. I am going to confirm the location/name and will probably hunt there this year. Russian Boar are supposed to be pretty tasty and there are meat processors near by to drop the hog off at.

I went out after the wind died down. Caught 23 with a mix of eyes and saugers.  12 to 15”   With no slots. Fished 12 to 27’.

For Vermilion, the Lowrance lake insight data is identical to Lakemaster, 3 foot contours.

Maybe you should check the various sites that sell mapping stuff?   What is the Lowrance offering?   Is there a different Navionics choice?

You're correct trumy.  I just posted this on that page.  Thank you.

Hi everyone, I will be heading to Echo Lake, in the superior national Forest, the middle of June.  Never been there, but the small amount I found on this site says it's a good fishing lake.  Does anyone have past experience on this lake?  I'm targeting walleye mostly, but Pike and crappie are always on my menu.  Are there any lure colors that have worked well for you?  I'm mostly a live bait fisherman.  Any presentations that worked well?  Any advice will be greatly appreciated with this lake, and I will report back how it went/what worked.  Thank you everyone.
