Lake Sarah

Recommended Posts

Out again Saturday and filled with average size for Sarah in a few hours in the normal suspended patterns. Any of you full timers out there still getting a few over 11". Not worried about catching enough to make me happy but now looking to get a few bigger fish in the day. Would you credit time spent to getting the larger fish, upsizing minnow or the right stink on the fingers trick.

Could be ice trolling! Just drill a line of holes get the wind right and away we go. A new sport. Have to upsize the jig I suppose. I think a 3/8 would do the trick.

Veer sharp to right at access. Real sloppy heading straight out. Otherwise ice was fine on Wed. Should hold up for driving this weekend but it will be sloopy. Dig out the waders.

I haven't fished Sarah in a year so I went out the last few evenings. I caught the smallest crappies I've ever caught in my life. I also caught some decent ones but overall they were sssssmmmmmmaaaallllll!

What happened? I tried different spots but it seems as thought there are millions of tiny crappies in Sarah.

Any comments?

Thanks,

Ole

PS.... They sure were cute little buggers! laugh.gif

Ole and Slayer, I'm glad you don't like Sarah, that 2 less guys on the lake and more crappies for me. And I ain't talking itty-bitties or even 10in. "slabs" as you say, Im talking real slabs. 12in.+ Stay away from the crowds maybe that is your problem.

Grey Goose,

I don't go near the crowds on Sarah. I've had good luck in the past few years out there, in fact I caught my biggest Crappie out there, but this week I went out to a couple of my spots and the fish were tiny. Maybe the bigger ones were effected by that pressure system that went through.

Shoot me an email if you would. I'd like to talk to you more about this!

Thanks,

Ole

Sarah alway has always been loaded with small crappies. I havent fish Sarah in about 5 years and I live less than 4 miles from there. The crappies are way to small to keep me interested. I know there are some nice ones there 11-12 with very few bigger than that. Its a really easy lake to find the fish because there almost everywhere. Its a great lake if you want action, but if your looking for lots of quality fish I'd look elsewhere.

ps. If you put in some time you can find some good gill fishing! grin.gif

I was out last evening on Sarah, and the fish seemed pretty inactive. Most hits where coming on a slow dropping jig. And yes, the fish where a tad on the smaller side. But we had three around 10in. and one over 11. I don't think we where on the right spot though. I usually could find it by using fish houses to aline myself, but they are gone. I shouldda marked it with gps. Ohh well. I'm not saying Sarah is loaded with bigguns, but I catch enough 10-12in almost everytime to keep going back. And I live 45 miles away! I have only fished Sarah for a couple of years so I know nothing of what it used to be like. But if there has been a decline I would have to guess it is due to the pressure it recieves, especially for panfish. I'm not trying to start nothing by saying this, but I wish they would add a slot limit out there, and on many other lakes.

We had a good night Sat for numbers. Size was a little off but got 9 around the 10" mark. Had to move shallower than we had been. Drilled about 20 holes - where's Moby1 when you need him??- to find the fish but stayed on them after that. Best lure was a Ratso moderately jigged followed by minnows on a bare hook.

Looks like you've been hitting sarah instead of tonka lately. I was out there saturday and sunday a.m. as usual. Cuaght more in the 3-6" range than ever this weekend. My auger locked up on the trip to URL on the first hole. Borrowed Tonkaboy's this weekend. It didnt cut as easy as mine but still drilled a fair amount of holes. My new powerhead should be arriving from eskimo hopefully by tomorrow....free of charge. They are also reimbursing me for shipping. Their customer service is top notch. Last year I broke phils auger bit on sarah. I contacted eskimo and not only did they give me a replacement, one of thier workers brought the bit over to Joes sporting goods in st paul. I bought mine shortly after that partly because of the service. Glad I did. I may get out this week if it shows up. I have to try it out ya know. I may try med. Sarah is a little far for a quick after work outing.

Buzz,

Mark and I want to know if you are up for a trip to pool4 the 25th of march...we want to invade your boat! Or, if Matt wants to join us, two boats are in order...what do you say? I'll give you those GPS coordinates then!

I'm in, I was waiting to hear back from Bryan (a buddy of mine) he is gone the whole week prior and now may have trouble bailing on his family that day.... either way, I plan on going! I was just going to put in at Everts on the Wisconsin side and fish the area's I fished last year...I was hoping to learn a few more from Mr. Mark... I'd be more than happy to put whomever in my boat and of course all three of you guys are good peeps so lets figure out who's in and figure out how many boats we'll need.

Mike

18 in of snow in Hastings, you fellas might want to put it off for a week or so, pretty sure that snow cooled off the water quite a bit, plus the roads and ramps will take a while to get cleared out. Were in full moon now but it will be the next one and the new moon prior that should be a good time to be there. Gluck what ever goes down.

Mabey we should retitle this thread as "pool 4" Just kidding fellas. Heading out to sarah in a few minutes with tim. It may be the last outing on the ice but who knows. Im just glad not to be walking with all that snow. Ill post when I get back as to the ice conditions. Be in california half the week so I guess after today depends on how the ice holds up

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
