Canada fishing from Kab

Recommended Posts

My first trip to Kab this summer. Can somoene please verify my findings.

1) I can only cross the Canada imaginary line while traveling but I cannot stop without a Remote Crossing permit?

2) I cannot fish on the Canada side without a Canadian fishing license and Remote Crossing?

3) I cannot have any live bait not bought in Canada? And if so I need a reciept for it showing it was bought in Canada?

4) I did read something about night crawlers wrapped in paper?

5) If my assumptions above are correct is it worth it?

Any help would be great. Sounds like my GPS will be handy to keep me out of trouble?

Thanks

twoboys, You have it pretty close to right on. Understand also, that Kabtogama is totally within the U.S. You have to travel to Namakan to go into Canada to fish. You need a Remote Area Border Crossing permit any time you go into Canada, whether you stop to fish or not. You also need to check into U.S. Customs upon your return.. You can now get a form I-68 from U.S. Customs to enter back. Similar to the RABC from the Canadians. No live minnows or leeches without a receipt, Canadian license necessary.. Overall, not worth the problems and paperwork necessary. I guide these lakes and never fish the Canadian side... Plenty of area and fish on the U.S. side. Good Luck Fishkab

twoboys,

All of Kab is in MN. No worries, fish where you want with MN license. Namakan is a border lake and so yes you could stray into Canada. There is plenty of water on MN side though and a good map and the GPS will keep you on the appropriate side of the border.

You can't enter Canada without either going to customs first or a Remote Access Border Crossing Permit. If you go to Canada you can't come back without heading to US Customs or getting the comparable US remote crossing permit (see FishKab's post). So there you have it.

There is a ton of water on Kab and the MN side of Namakan for you to fish and explore. I would not worry about chasing down the necessary permits for remote crossing if you are looking for fishing opportunities. Its not worth the time. I did get the permits one year for a kayak trip through Canada and they aren't terribly difficult to attain if you need to travel into Canada. Enjoy the trip and the area.

The worm bedding you buy at the store (paper based) is what they are speaking of. They just don't want you importing worms in soil (could contain disease / other critters I suppose)

When I was younger it was neat to think and say you are in Canada.

Best thing about kab and Nam is that you dont have to fish in Canada. Fishing is excellent on the U.S. Side.

Good luck to you!!!

A couple of other things to keep you out of trouble. Some may seem pretty obvious but don't take offense.

1. You may not possess more than one limit of fish at a time. You can't have both US and Canadian limits in the boat.

2. All fish transported on the water must be measureable. that means heads and tails intact. This is because the Namakan chain is experimental waters.

3. If you have fish from Canada that would be illegal in the US (outside the slot) you must travel straight to your point of origin(landing, lodging etc. If you stop and fish the assumption is made that you caught them in the US and you would be in possession illegally.

This border water fishing is great. I would just spend some time reading the Minnesota fishing regulations. Especially pages 10-13 and the special reg section starting on page 24. If you do that you shouldn't have any problems.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?

Drove through Annandale last Tuesday and was really bummed to still only see the old cement slab at Little Jim's. Hope they can get it built-back-better! 🙂

I heard recently the water level had gone down some. Sound like folks are re really dealing with a mess.    Fishing pictures look like a good year in that regard.   Hope the property loss isn't terrible but seems bad.   Bill

Yesterday was a grind to find bigger fish but we landed a few. Only 3 fish overall but they were all nice fish, all C&R. I do believe the sunfish are out of the shallows besides small ones. Thursday I took the nephews out and didn't see any on beds.

Glad you keep coming back, Mark. And glad you still know the way to catch a slew of walleyes. I wish i could’ve learned more while you were here. But I appreciate all the information you provide on what worked for you.  Strange year. We just got part of our dock in and our boat. I fished a couple hours this morning for the first time on a Frazer hump you know and caught ten under 12” and one keeper which I released… a nice 26+“. I’m hoping more to come soon. I hope all is well with you, Dick

Maybe the bamboozler will end up being like every fish story, some old timers holding their hands out as wide as possible to demonstrate to a youngster just how big it was....
