What an outstanding event! I've attended the last couple Cool Cats and they have been nothing short of exceptional!

This is one of those events where A LOT of laughs and stories are told, as well as one heck of a good feed! smile.gif

Some very good fishing to be has as well, and catching a catfish through the ice is an experience that is well worth the trip! Catfish are probably one of my favorite species to target through the ice, what a blast!

I'll be there, no doubt about that!

I agree, this is a GREAT EVENT were lots of people come together and make what this site is all about....HAVE MORE FUN! I had the chance to attend lasts year event and what a turn out we had!

I unfortunately won't be able to attend this years event. I have another trip planned for this weekend. But if things change, I would definately consider being at the Cool Cats 2006 gathering.

Barring a tragedy, I'll be there along with my son. I've spent the past eleven months hearing the question, "WHEN ARE WE GOING TO COOL CATS ON HORSESHOE LAKE?"

What a great time this event is. Really looking forward to the 4th.

Dennis if you would like any help from me I will be available, just drop me a note at [email protected]

ky-typical walleye stuff has always worked for me. Go Devil Spoons, Rattle Varmits, Angle eye Jr. and a minnow head.

With much regret, Young Gun and I will have to miss this one. The Zumbo Zinger is the same day, so unless scientists speed up the cloning experiments we can't be in two places at the same time. Shame too, because this event really is fun! Fishheads catfish fillets are worth the trip alone. Mmmm mmmmm good!

So everybody take lots and lots of picture and be sure to post them.

hmmmm...Cool Cats or Zumbro Zinger? Both I'm sure will be a blast. Boy...this is going to be a tough decision.

Count me in and possibly my g/f. Last year was fun, even though my transducer broke, the fishing was only a small part of the fun.

Oh, yeah. What DID ever happen to the video shot out there last year?

Hey dennis, besides the barbequed beans, do you think anyone would object to my gang also bringing the fixings for chili cheese dogs with everything?? Since its a cat gathering, I don't want to offend people with the dog stuff. If all else fails, my boys and I will eat them all. grin.gifgrin.gif

Ok, I'm in along with a buddy.

Now to the question I always ask on these get togethers.. Should I bring my wheeler? Or will most be driving on the ice?

I was on the 'Shoe today and found a good 16 to 18" of ice near the event location. We did drive out to the event location in my 3/4ton truck. If you plan to investigate other areas of the lake, I would bring a sled or wheeler. The Horseshoe system is a large chain with current running between the lakes.

If you decide to drive out to the location, it would be best to access at the winter access marked on the map and stay on the ice road.

I am getting excited about seeing everyone there. I recieved some great prizes to give away from our ICE Series sponsors. The only cost of the raffle is you have to say hello to me!

ALso don't forget the pot luck lunch and fish fry around noon. SOunds like there will be some good digs!

Dennis I agree the ice is looking good I highly recomend that the people stay on the trail and once they reach the area they put ample space between their vehicles when parking. As far as the catting I ran to a couple of the river holes over the weekend and can I say they were tricky!! The cats have been finiky lately I managed to get some to go but serious downsizeing was a must. I did manage to get a few on cut bait below a Ice buster bobber but the best set-up was a panfish rig. I was useing a ThorneBros 28" sweetheart 2 lb test and small ice jigs gobbed with waxworms. The fish seemed super sensitive they were stacked but wanted a small presentation. Just a thought for anyone comeing to cool-cats don't rule out bringing some finese gear for these cats. I know it seems impossible but with a good real with a quality drag and a good rod these fish with patience can be iced when the going gets tough. Hopefully they are a little more agressive Sat. Hope to see everyone on Sat!!

Guys, I will not be able to make it to cool cats this year. The only Saturday that I have to work...bummer.

The cat bite has been strange this year, but it's picked up the last couple of weeks even around the meth hole. The active feeding window varies daily, although an afternoon bite has been more consistent than a morning bite. Ice conditions vary depending on location, but it's basically doubled in the last couple of weeks. Many people were driving out to the meth hole area last Saturday. On Friday I did find an area on the chain with just 5 inches of ice, so don't stray if you don't know the area. Matt, Cory- you know this location.

Depending on where you park the walk can be real long. There is on spot that is closer but very few places to park. I drove out there on Saturday and stayed on the road until I got right to the area. Stay on the ice road and please stay slow. Seen many driving at high speeds on Saturday especially after dark and near the Hole. Right now it appears as the hole is slightly iced over but if like last year we will mark it somehow.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
