I heard a few perch are coming off of bean, but I know nothing else cause I have never fished the lake. I was out all weekend on Bloody and did well until Sunday afternoon. Saturday afternoon my wife and I caught about 35 crappies and 3 walleyes. Most fish averaged about 10 inches, however, a guy right next to me caught a huge 15 1/4 inch crappie. The thing was a monster. He gave it to us because my wife is a taxidermist. She plans on hanging it up in Joe's gas station in Pipestone. Anyways, sunday was not as good. My friend right next to me caught about 25 Crappies while I was at church and at noon is when fishing turned bad. We had people place their permanent shacks and portables no further than ten foot from out house. They had three four wheelers running around, they drilled about 4,000,000,000 holes. I dont mind fishing around people, but we got away from the crowds kind of "on our own" and then people plant right on top of us. It kind of wrecked our weekend and deffinitely our fishing. Between our two shacks we never caught another single fish after they showed up. Better luck next time!

Maybe if your shack wasn't so big you wouldn't attract so much attention to you and your party grin.gif Wondering why your fishin partner is ill today. Have too much fun in the shanty yesterday? tuk

You now walleye frey, I had the same thing happen out on Lake thompson, snowmobiles thinking it was BIR rigth next to us. Had the whole lake to do it on but, they we're right on top of us. Which brings about this Question, isn't there a law similar to the open waterlaws w/ jet ski's, that they have to be so far away from any fishing shelters?? I know if I'd of had any little kids around, I would of had to keep them inside, cause they we're that close. Any thoughts on this??, Comments?? Better luck next time, The Bumble

Just kinda curious. Is Fey Industries owned by your family? I do occasional deliveries for Western Printing here in Marshall so I've been there a few times.

I'd love to see a photo of that crappie. Unfortunately this website does not allow photos of dead fish or fish that are about to be dead, on this website. That is a heck of a crappie though. Too bad some people have to be such jerks and spoil another's enjoyment.

Fey Industries is not owned by my family. Sure, they are relatives but we have ties to the plant. My family ownes and opperated Rogers Auto Sales here in Edgerton. My mom and dad are the owners and my brother and I do the sales and service of the business. We have sold many cars to the Marshall area - kind of a "bread and butter" area for us. My wife ownes and opperates Second Nature Taxidermy here in Edgerton. She started the business shortly after our marriage and she is really busy. It helps that she has a big passion for the wildlife and she loves to hunt and fish. If they would let me post the photo I sure would, cause the fish was a beauty. My friend and I were up again Sunday and only caught 15. The size of most fish were in that 9-10 inch range. The cold front didnt help the bite. We are headed up to Upper Red Lake this weekend and hope to get into the bite up there. Keep tabs on this site if you here of anything going on and I will do the same.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
