West Metro Report

Recommended Posts

Myself, Mykal, G-man, and Tim from the site decided to meet up early at a West Metro lake that has historically put out great panfish numbers and size. Tim had a couple of sleds to get us to the honey hole. From the time the first hole was drilled we marked schools of fish moving in the area. The crappie bite was lite but moderatly aggressive. For the most part the crappies were 8-10 ers but there were a couple of 12 ers caught as well. We also found some nice sunfish mixed in. Everyone who chose to bring home a meal went home happy. The good news about this body of water is the crappie bite is a day bite and no small window of opportunity. I am confident we could have stayed there the remainder of the afternoon and caught fish all day. Tim and Mykal had plans for the boat show so we called it a day. Overall great day on the ice.

Mykal- Good to see you again. I am sure we will see you out on this West metro gem many more times before ice out.

Tim- Good to meet you and I think I speak for everyone. Thanks for the sleds to ride to the spot. I am guessing it was a good mile from the access.

G-Man- Glad to get you out on a good bite so you can put that new fillet knife to use. Hope you and your wife enjoyed a good afternoon fish fry.

Hopefully see you all on the hard water again very soon.

What is the point of posting this other than to brag? West metro honey hole? Gimme a break. If you're not going to name the lake, don't waste my time with your self-gratification.

I disagree with that sentiment. A common complaint that I hear at bait shops and read on this forum is that Metro lakes are pressured so much that the only panfish available are about the size of ruffles potato chips. Not so. I myself went out on a Metro neighborhood lake today for about an hour and a half and caught 15 bluegills in the 8 to 9" class. Threw half of them back. I like to read about the success of other people on lakes around these parts, and if you are nice to them, they may even invite you along sometime...

TJ, The post was not meant to offend or brag. Just sharing a day on the hard water shared by a few FMers that have a passion for fishing. I apologize if the communication came across wrong.

I can also direct you to the general area where you can find a pretty girl but I hope you don't need me to hold your hand to direct you to her honey hole as well...

Mr.Pike, sounds like you had a great time and great weather. I spent the day in a hockey rink but I have Monday off and hope to hit a spot I have had nice success at in the past. I think if a person puts his/hers time in and trys to find spots they will have a honey hole also. I have only been ice fishing for 4-5 years and learning on my own, I think that I have done pretty well. I do have a lot to learn and FM has helped a lot. Thanks to all of you who share even the smallist of info. It helps.

Fishing Tech, I have met many great people from the site. I have learned from many and shared with many as well. This year has been kind of differnt with all the odd weather patterns. I have had good success with Pike, crappie, sunfish, and perch. I have really struggled this year with the walleye. The bite on smaller lakes has been tough. I now Milleacs has had a good bite most of the winter but it is really like a 1-2 hour window at dusk.

Good luck if you get out on Monday. I am going to stuck at work planning my next adventure on the ice.

Mr.Pike, I have never fished for walleyes. I usaully fish for crappies. Mostly on east metro lakes because with 2 kids in hockey I dont get alot of chances to get out. My father and I picked up a boat 2 years ago but even in the summer it is hard to find time. So when I get out it is easier for me to locate crappies and sunnies for a meal than try things to catch walleyes. With 3 kids in sports basicly year round time for fishing is hard to find. my parents did it for me so I am doing it for mine. My dad and I are hitting the spot tomorrow and I will let you know how we did.

Nothing, notta, zip. Drilled holes for 3 hours and never marked a fish. Either it is the strange winter or my spot has been abused.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
