Minnesota City Boat Harbor

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anyone has been out to the Minnesota City Boat Harbor this winter. I used to go down there and do pretty well. It was also a nice place to throw a Tip-up out to watch?? Has or does anybody fish that anymore?

poeple defintly fish it, this year i went there during early ice, but havent been there since then... i have heard reports from there that are about 50-50. Some days they do well, others all they can catch are some tiny potato chips. Tip-ups do, do well there. Ive been out there at times where poeple will drive their cars out on the ice and just sit in their cars and watch their tip-ups. (seems boring to me) if you catch them on the right day, the harbor defintly can be productive... hope that helps

Thanks Tim, I may get down there and give it a shot then. Have any idea how thick the ice is? Heck maybe even Sunday pending on the weather and the woman!! Thanks Again

the ice is plenty thick from what i here, it usually takes a long time for the harbor to thaw, and a "winona ice" (a member of the forum) was out there last sunday and said there was plenty of ice, and its only grown from there with the cold temps weve had, good luck

I heard that you have to be a member to park, put in and fish from there. Is this true?

I have been fishing out on the harbor quite a bit lately. On tuesday there was 10-11 inches of ice. Some crazy guy even drove his truck out there. The fishing has been hit or miss for me, but the fish have been pretty good size when i can catch them. Last week i caught some of the biggest white bass i have ever seen and a lot of gills and crappies.

Thanks guys, but didn't get a chance to make it down there this weekend, now I'll have to wait for a couple of weeks. Keep me posted on how things are going down there. Good luck!!

No Steve I don't think you do. Scott and I have put in there and I know neither of us are members. I've never heard anything like that, but you know how much experience I have with boats.

i dont think you have to be a member either ive been there many times including today and ive never been approached. As far as the day went there were fish in the area, as i was marking them on the vexilar. However they were very picky. I was sitting in about 25 fow and they were 5-10 feet off. We had to change size and color many times to figure out what worked best, it seemed to be green and they wanted something smaller (around the 14-16 size). We did manage to catch some decent crappies with one in the 13-14 range and all the gills were good size too with the best around 8''. I think if you time it out well and you get on top of the fish out there you could have one good day. I might go back out there or to bartlett tomorrow, since we have no school, so ill let you all know how we do

good luck,

tim

the fish have a case of the lock jaw, i was out there yesterday for 3 hrs and the fish were very picky, the ones that were caught were mostly smaller but there were some bigger ones in the mix, one really nice perch, but over all not a productive trip, maybe next time

i was out again yesterday for a few hours, i didnt plan on going to the boat harbor but there was a small village on the ice at the tube and i was looking or some peice and quite. The fish were still pretty picky but they seem to have become a little more active. I got into alot of average size gills and 2 crappies one of which was a monster, 14 inches on the tape. sooner or later they are going to turn on, i just hope im there

good luck

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
