was out on horseshoe today in search of the elusive slab and all these full size pickups kept driving to and fro from the back bay, turns out they were seining the carp and buffalo out, the guy said they took 50000lbs of fish out. Hooray!!!!!! real interesting process, he said they ship most of the fish overseas. anyone ever seen or heard of this before???

Usually I see them out on Sakatah and Tetonka. It is really neat how they do it. How's Horseshoe been doing lately? Was out there w/ my brother about 2 weekends ago and we didn't do too good, turned out we should have gone there in the morning instead of the lake we did go to.

I talk to one of the guys who ship carp in the area almost everyday. Most of the carp go to the New York area, a delacasee (sp) out there. If he gets alot of bigger fish, or they grow them in private ponds, 30 plus pounds, they go to fishing ponds which they sell tickets 100$ to fish. You fish for carp and the biggest fish per hour gets like a 1000$. It's kinda like gambling/ tournament fishing. It's down south, alabama, mississippi area. And when we catch them we throw them in the weeds. smile.gif

From what I've read they used to be a gamefish here. Many lakes were stocked with them for fishing back in the 19th century when the area was settled, they soon realized that there were other more desirable fish and couldn't rid the lakes of these fish that they stocked. It's amazing that these fish were stocked in numbers for fishing in some of the lakes around MN.

They are a game fish here. I feel it is one of favorite species to target with my Hoyt bow. Ha Ha I like to help weed a few out and feed the farm cats.

Yea the way I figure on some of the lakes in southern minnesota it's not even worth fishing sometimes, thats when I grab the ol bow and let her rip

Actually Carp was imported from Germany in the late 1800s. it is NOT a native fish, just like pheasants are not native.

It is a gourmet and table fish in Europe and Asia.

It is not a bad fish to...fish for, just has a bad rep here in the US, but it's a lot of fun and a big fighter. In fact there are numerous carp fishing clubs all over the country.

I've seen them seining around Faribault. One of the guys on the cell phone haggling prices with New York right out on the lake. Depending on what the buyer decided or price negotiated, they sorted the sizes differently, I think.

Hey Clamtrap,

I once read an article about Minnesota fish and parasites. It said that the carp was the only fish found in Minnesota that does NOT have parasites.Maybe now you will go fishing for carp and fillet one out.

Let me know how it tastes!

actually its the buffalo that they are after. the buffalo are a native fish and they get a good price for them in new york.they are sold as a cosher fish and the jewish people eat them raw.the carp are sold locally and im not sure what they do with them. I used to help net the fairmont area.

The mayflies are just starting in Frazier Bay.  We could see a few in the boat the last couple of days.  Then started seeing big trails on water yesterday and today.  I just got done cleaning 3 walleyes and they were full of them.

Have the Mayflies started.  We are coming up end of July and trying to see what the time line for them are this year.  Not sure how the late ice out would effect the hatch.  Thanks in advanced.

Just an update, walleye are still hanging on the week edges.  I caught mine in 8-10FOW again.  Lost one that was 4-5lbs.  Best part, I have yet to use livebait this open water season.  Basically the same technique as last week.     Only issue is finding the weeds that hold the fish.  Same as last week, just looking on SI, finding small transitions between weed edge, soft/hard bottom ect.     Once you find them, then you can spot lock/talon down and cast at them.     And, as before all fish were released.

Saturday and Sunday were tough days on the water, NW winds post cold front. Got better yesterday and today. Took a retired friend out today and sent him home with 4, should have been 6 but I was off my game. Water Temps around 70. Unfortunately can only fish Thursday as I have to work a few days, this weekend. Safe travels on the Independence weekend!

Wasn’t quite sure how this week would turn out because of all the reviews but have had a blast and caught some awesome fish. Very weedy in most of the lake canoe out to less weedy area and fished around the weeds caught multiple 4  even heavier bass in a row definitely recommend it
