Hi guys:

I am planning a trip this spring to Minnewaska to smallmouth fish. Can you tell me anything about Hunt's Resort ? It looks nice.. The wife will be along so I need a presentable resort for her. Any input would be helpful.

Thanks

smallmouth fish huh ? wow... thats not going to be easy

considering I've been fishing minnewaska year round for 6 years now and I think I've caught like 6 smallmouths total

we have PLENTY of largemouths, smallies are hard to come by

Hunts is an alright resort, its improved since it was bought not too long ago... some really good bass fishing off the shores

There are alot more smallies than you think. Early summer and late fall are the best times. If you find 'em the size will impress. Good luck.

Hey Hot Bite:

Thanks for the info. I thought Minnewaska was a good smallmouth fishery ? Read the DNR lake report and a few comments from this board and assumed they were to be found in pretty good numbers...... What lakes would you suggest in Alexandria for smallmouth ?? I am proficient in bass fishing but will be limited to a resort boat rental.

All input is appreciated - thanks

"Waska" is a great smallie lake. If your using a rental boat make sure it has good electronics, as alot of the smallie fishing is done on the deeper breaks. Early in the season you can hit the smallies on almost all of the primary gravel points from 4 to 12 feet. I usually jerk stick-baits. Some of the docks on either side of the points will start to hold smallies as the season progresses. By July I look for deep weedlines for the strongest smallie bite. This is a great lake to fish, be carefull of the weather, as it can blow-up on this body of water very quickly.

Hot Bite: I gave you alot of info. on the original post. If you have fished "Waska" alot then you know where all the major points are, and which of them hold gravel and rocks. Because I guide on "Waska" and fish tournaments there I will not be giving away specific spots. This sight is to powerful for that... any small spot I gave you could get beat-up pretty badly. That being said... If you fished no where else other than school house point all year long spring to freeze-up you will catch more than your fair share of smallies. wink.gif

I don't fish bass basically at all, but I've caught a fair amount of smallies on Minnewaska just fishing walleyes & I've never fished it very much. Most of the ones I've caught were along the SE shore breaks near rocks.

Hi Agape:

Thanks for the info - I was just looking for a little confidence that the lake could serve up some nice smallies... I guess I will be spending a few days on it this early June. Thanks to all - will check in for fishing report in May .

5599: We will be glad to give you a fishing report for May, but it will have to be for walleye, northern or panfish. Our bass season will not open until 27th of May. I can give you a report about bass fishing on the Mississippi or Okiboji as those tournaments start in April. Not soon enough for me.

You still have your trailer and place up there? Maybe you should do some summer rentals of it to help pay the taxes and up keep on it? 👍

The water is starting to slowly go down. From what I can tell it looks like it’s down about 5-6 inches. The wind was terrible over the weekend though. I’m sure many properties suffered damages with Sundays winds. Things are finally starting to head in the right direction but it’s going to take a very long time for things to get back to even somewhat normal.

Stopped at VC last week as well.  Didn't have pizza, but the sandwiches and appetizers we had were good.  The service was very good.  However, that's the first and only time we had been there.

Any other info about VC?   Got kid and and fam coming up.  Been a couple years but really liked it.   Reviews on line still good.   Did Mark just hit on a bad night or has it gone down?   Being on west not a place we go often.

Going up to visit family at Mille lacs 4th of July weekend. Given the current fishing restrictions and the fact that I don’t have a boat, does anyone know any good shore/kayak fishing lakes in the Mille lacs area?

Spent yesterday afternoon wading the upper croix. Water actually seemed a little low. There was lots of floating grass, so my traditional approach of using a fire tiger jointed rapala was unusable. Tried a whopper plopper for a bit, which avoided floating grass better, but I just didn’t have confidence in using it. So since it seemed like the crayfish outnumbered the rocks, I decided to use a weightless Texas rigged plastic craw. Caught 3 smallies, and a pike.

Here's the actual water level as of Saturday, 6-25. It has dropped some but still is 4 feet above the rule curve. This is updated daily; it's just too early in the day for Sunday's data to be posted. You can check it yourself here: http://www.lwcb.ca/waterflowdata.html

@chaffmj, never mind.  I decided to take a cruise on up there today.  Had a couple popple tops in the driveway but nothing I couldn’t clear.  Nice to see the area again.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?
