planing to fish winona this weekend hows the ice around airport /bartlett

Recommended Posts

As far as i know airport and bartlett are the same bodies of water... i havent been out there for about a week and last time i was there was when we had that big warm spell. The ice was pretty sketchy in some places, so i walked the shoreline all that way down to the island. The landing had open water in front of it that day so i didnt even try to walk across, straight out from the landing. It's been pretty cold here though the past few days and its not supposed to warm up very much at all. So we should be making ice for about a week straight by the time the weekend comes. I plan on checking the ice on bartlett/airport on thrusday, so ill have a good answer by thursday night. But if the ice is safe me and some buddies will be out there on saturday for sure, come say hi we will be in the 5600 and clam jr it would be nice to meet you.

There are some other spots in the winona area where i have been catching fish as well if airport is not safe, send me an email ( [email protected] ) and ill let you know where they are biting

Well I made it out to lake this morning and the ice is really making some music. I found there was about 8" or more of clear ice in front of the bandshell and about 6" around the boat landing farther down. For the fishing well it was very slow. we caught about a dozen small gills in front of the bandshell. we fished all depths form 7fow to 20fow. We made a move around 9am to the boat launch and drilled about 10 holes looking for fish and finally found some in 33fow suspended at about 15fow. Got a few bites and alot of lookers but no takers. at about 11am we moved to the backwaters along side the road just down from the bridge and caught about 6 4" sunnies nothing to brang about but all in all I found a new spot to try and it always beats work.

yeah,

lake winona has been pretty dissappointing for me this year compared to last, seems like all the fish are small, i keep hearing about people getting on the crappies in certain areas but it seems im always one day late smirk.gif good to here you caught some fish though, thanks for the report

Got out on Lake Winona from about 1-3:30 today. Right out from the bandshell probably about 40 yards from shore. Started out shallow in around 6 feet but I didn't find any fish. Went out deeper into water i'm guessing was around 10-12 feet. Started hitting some nice sized bluegills but couldn't stay out too long with the wind. As i was getting ready to leave the gills really started to get going. Ice was probably about 5 or 6 inches, looked like new ice. If you ask me I'd wait to get out there til about 2 in the afternoon and fish towards dark. Talked to a guy who was out there in the morning and he didn't have as good of luck. Seems to be an afternoon bite. Good luck

You still have your trailer and place up there? Maybe you should do some summer rentals of it to help pay the taxes and up keep on it? 👍

The water is starting to slowly go down. From what I can tell it looks like it’s down about 5-6 inches. The wind was terrible over the weekend though. I’m sure many properties suffered damages with Sundays winds. Things are finally starting to head in the right direction but it’s going to take a very long time for things to get back to even somewhat normal.

Stopped at VC last week as well.  Didn't have pizza, but the sandwiches and appetizers we had were good.  The service was very good.  However, that's the first and only time we had been there.

Any other info about VC?   Got kid and and fam coming up.  Been a couple years but really liked it.   Reviews on line still good.   Did Mark just hit on a bad night or has it gone down?   Being on west not a place we go often.

Going up to visit family at Mille lacs 4th of July weekend. Given the current fishing restrictions and the fact that I don’t have a boat, does anyone know any good shore/kayak fishing lakes in the Mille lacs area?

Spent yesterday afternoon wading the upper croix. Water actually seemed a little low. There was lots of floating grass, so my traditional approach of using a fire tiger jointed rapala was unusable. Tried a whopper plopper for a bit, which avoided floating grass better, but I just didn’t have confidence in using it. So since it seemed like the crayfish outnumbered the rocks, I decided to use a weightless Texas rigged plastic craw. Caught 3 smallies, and a pike.

Here's the actual water level as of Saturday, 6-25. It has dropped some but still is 4 feet above the rule curve. This is updated daily; it's just too early in the day for Sunday's data to be posted. You can check it yourself here: http://www.lwcb.ca/waterflowdata.html

@chaffmj, never mind.  I decided to take a cruise on up there today.  Had a couple popple tops in the driveway but nothing I couldn’t clear.  Nice to see the area again.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?
