Things mite be improving....

Recommended Posts

The Red up here has been nothing short of "slow" for much of January, but if the past two mornings are any indication, things are definately changing! The past two consecutive mornings produced some decent action for walleye. Yesterday morning (or day two) not only produced the best day I've seen this year for numbers, a buddy of mine ended up icing his very first trophy 'eye, a "hefty" 28.5 incher! During our three hour session, we ended up with 14 fish, nine 'eyes and the rest saugers. No one particular lure presentation seemed to be dominate, jigs produced and so did Salmo's Chubby Darter and Zipper.

Are plans are to head out again Sunday morning with Canuck and another friend, hopefully we'll have something good top report.

Catmendo and Canuck,

Good report and good luck, guys! I wish I had to time to get up there again this winter, but don't see it happening. I've already started my workout regimen for those beautiful cats! grin.gif I always look forward to that.

Marine_Man and myself and our dads just got back from from Selkirk. The trip wasn't bad we got some nice fish but not alot. Marine_Man did pull a 10# 29" walleye and his dad got a 9.5# 27" walleye both are personal bests. It would have been nice to have some more numbers but we will take the quality.

You guys got up there again I see. I wish I could make another trip up there, but I'll have to wait until next year. I see those greenbacks are still hanging around, it should get real good once March rolls around.

Hey Marine_Man,

Nice fish. I'm actually working right across the road from you right now in the Marketing Services building. We need to meet and get on some fish once this darn arctic blast subsides. Much nicer last week in Cabo San Lucas that's for sure. I work with V. Hoistad in the parts writing dept. Swing on in sometime and introduce yourself or I'll come over and find you some afternoon. I assume you're in the engineering building??

We should coordinate for December 06 and make it up the same weekend. Maybe even carpool from Fargo. We've got a while though.

I realize that most have limited budgets and more times than not a road trip of any significants usually means a "once a year" outing! However, as good as December is up here on the Red, come late February and March can be incredibly interesting out on Lake Winnipeg.

To date the action out there has been sporatic even on the so-called good days, but we're hoping to see a dramatic change in feeding patterns any day now. Once this cold snap disperses, we plan to put in a good effort on the lake. So for anyone that might be interested, stay tuned! If the action picks up, I'll let everyone know about it!!!

I have spring break from march 13th to march 17th. Just curious about prices for licenses, guide services available (if needed), equipment to buy/bring and the like. I would be coming from Fargo and would love to get into some walleyes. Thank you in advance for information.

I've been a fulltime professional fishing guide for more than twenty years now; (wait a minute, that just reminded me how old I'm getting, Yikes!) and in my opinion you don't need a guide up here providing that you're willing to take some sound advice!

Anyone who is staying with me at "Cats" always gets first hand advice as where the action is. If the action heats up out on Lake Winnipeg, you will definitely need good advice as to where........she's one big lake!!!

Like I stated in my last post, over the weeks to come, my plans are to spend much of my time and effort on the lake rather than the river. Last March the action was explosive for numbers and size out there and there's no reason that this won't repeat!

I've had this lifelong fascination with Lake Winnipeg and her resources. Incredibly, the province of Manitoba has never promoted this absoutely amazing fishery other than promoting the commercial gill netting industry. Because this system is literally stuffed with huge walleye and pike, it has incredible potentials as a sport fishing venue, especially during the winter months.....

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
