Hey Mark. It would be pretty hard to get together on this trip, unless of coarse you happen to be on Sag at the time. My Wife and I are planning a few other trips on the trail this summer, and I wouldn't mind hiring you for a day, as we take our trailer up and can't tow the boat. Would love to get together with ya then???? How far in advance would a person need to book with ya? And what lakes do you offer to fish? This would be fun. Junky.....

I don't like to mention my business on the net because I'm about as busy as I want to be. Besides I don't charge fellow FMers if I can get away for a few hours of pre-fishing. wink.gif Northalnder has my email address, if you can get it from him we can probably work something out.

Hey Gunflint, the last time I talked with you last fall, you had said something about maybe trying a different lake in 06 for a better chance at a big fish? I think were alike as we always end up on Sag. I just like being out on that lake. Are the permits for sag always gone or just during the better times? I havent fished it before Oct 1st for many years.

Panhead,

It's good to hear from you again. Your spot on EB really heated up towards the end of october. Looks like this year will be different though with the one fish over 20 rule. I didn't catch a fish under 20 most of October last year and they're just getting bigger.

It seems to me that sag permits can be had most of the summer but you just never know. No word on the FS lawsuit yet. This year I reserved a permit for every other week from the end of May through September.

we got a couple of young guys working here now that think they're walleye experts wink.gif but they say that they're going to trap minnows this summer. We'll see how that goes.

If the water is high enough I want to try to get to North a couple of times. I know that there are big dogs in that lake. Good to hear from you again, see you this fall. gunflint

gunflint,

Many years ago (@10) i camped at gunflint pines a couple times and went into little gun, and then pulled my boat up into little north/north. At the time i had a 14'/20hp and it was very easy to get thru. Am i nuts ("nutser?") to think about considering to try and pull a 17'/90hp boat thru the channel? You know how time kinda plays tricks on your memory, and you convice yourself that it wouldnt be toooo bad? I was looking at the mid summer time frame, thought I'd maybe do a weekend trolling for trout in Gunflint and try to pull up into North for eye's and trout for a day.

If your on the floor laughing at my proposal as you read this, that might be all the response that i need grin.gif

OOpppps just saw that north/little north are BW waters, guess that rules that brainstorm out. Probably saved myself a week in traction grin.gifgrin.gif

Or is it, i'm a little confused now. I dont remember having to get a permit when i went into north the last time and the line looks like it goes along the south shoreline of North, not along the border. Hmmmmmmm?

I believe that the shore is the line for the BDUB. If I wanted to get a 90 horse into North I think I would wind it up in Little North and shoot the rapids at about 40 mph. shocked.gif Be sure to lift the prop. grin.gif

Just cruising thru the posts getting ready for our annual trip to Gunflint in a couple weeks and saw your note. Brought a smile remembering several years ago when a friend and I tried doing the run one summer with his new boat (16' w/ 25hp). A beaver dam slowed us bit and gave his new prop it's first dings, but it was fun...got stuck half way across the dam cause he didn't get on it enough (you know...new boat hesitancy). We eventually got thru after getting a little wet. 90hp and givin it heck would have done the trick, but prop would have been at risk. Wish you luck!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
