My brother has a cabin on the lake just wondering how the action has been up there this winter. If you have any info on the lake please let me know!

It's been slow out there, and most places around here this winter. It's a ghost town on Sallie; what few houses were out there were pulled off last week. Only one permanent left. You'd bee better off on Otter Tail or Pelican; sounds like they are getting fish out there...

Sallie can be good, just look for some of the humps and points on the north end of the lake just west of the access. Shore line breaks can be good as well.

Thanks for info guys! I'm probably going to head up there at the end of the month. It's been a slow year for me down in St.Cloud so i hope the fish are a little active up in DL.

I haven't been on Sallie in over a month, but I may get out sometime this work after work. I'll pass along a report if you're interested.

So far angel eye jr's and jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head have been the biggest producer of walleyes for me on Sallie this season. I've been catching small walleyes and perch during the day, but it seems that the bigger ones are biting around dusk. I haven't caught any pike or panfish so far. I was mainly targetting the humps Peter mentioned above.

Dead, how's it going. Give me a holler so we can get out some time. I'd still like to hit that crappie night bite with you that I still haven't hit yet this year.

Dead -- No pike? Wow. I was on Sallie two years ago and I couldn't keep the hammer handles off my line.

Anyone hitting the crappie spots yet?

Peter has been in trouble from what I've heard. And likely because he is wasting so much time sitting on dead water! LOL.

Sallie is a tricky lake. Gone are the days of limits of 14" walleyes every day. HOWEVER, this a a great lake for big fish, albeit hard to find.

One thing I would suggest is looking for shallow green weeds, with tip up and jigging and/or looking too the deeper basin areas. Many of my fish have come on these two patters, and pretty much all year long. Shallow or deep, flat breaks, and corners. There are some fantastic inside and outside corners all over that lake. So many people focus on that north and west half of the lake. However there are corners and small points all over that lake that hold fish! Not to mention a whole lot of 30 FOW that holds a good number of perch that are a great source of food, and the suspended tullibee which is a whole seperate pattern.

So.......you gotta just get out there and fish it! Don't sit in any one spot too long either!

One other suggestion!

Covering water in the summer months is a good idea, as fish roam constantly out there. Crawler harnesses and BB are great. Use artificial(gulp or berkley power bait) worms. Keeps the perch and sunnies from robbin ya blinds. And troll 2-2.5 mph. I used 15-20lb mono leaders to help out with the pike!

What's up Hammer, you slacker wink.gif. I may be meeting up with you at Milly this weekend, I've read good reports up there. I haven't been in trouble, just been doing my fishing on Friday's as to not leave my wife alone with the kids all day on a Saturday or Sunday. She works full time as well, and it just wouldn't be fair would it. I've also been doing most of my fishing on Height of Land since it's one of the few lakes you can drive on. It's one of the only lakes that I know I can go out and catch a bunch of bull gills, jumbo perch, and occassional crappie or walleye. With only being able to get out once a week, I don't have time to waste looking for fish and HOL is one of the few day bite lakes I know of. I can't remember the last time I fished past 4:45pm, so I haven't targeted walleyes once this year in MN. I also was in Hawaii for 9 days and just got back on the 29th. I do get one weekend a month for an ice fishing trip so I don't want to push my luck, if I get to go to Mille Lacs on Saturday, it will be the first time I fished on a Weekend day for a while.

Hitman, we'll have to get together some time. I'm a crappie man, is it you that has a good spot for them on Big C? I'd be willing to trade some coordinates for that one, Big C holds some huuuuuuuuuge crappies. It is one lake I like to hit in the spring every year. And yes, I am fortunately busy lending money, need some wink.gif?

F-Dog --

Sounds like a plan. I like to trade spots. It started out when I was a kid and trading a Johnny Bench for a Don Mattingly rookie card.

I thought I screwed him but as it turned out ... The rest is history.

Big crappies -- that would be fun.

Hitman, sounds good, I'll be in touch and we'll chase some fish. I have 2 decent spots on Big C for walleyes. Never icefished Big C before so I don't know if they are spots fished by icefisherman.

Later,

Fisherdog

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
