Anyone headed out this weekend

Recommended Posts

I am going out Saturday just dont know if I should hit Pokegama again or go to South Center. I havent had the best of luck at Pokegama this year but have always caught fish on the other hand I havent been to South Center yet and have done well there in the past. The nice thing about Pokegama is I can drive right out there but is there enough ice on South Center yet for a car? Any info or opinions appreciated. Thanks

I drove past South Center on Sunday and didn't see a whole lot of vehicles out there. A couple, but there were far more ATVs than trucks. I wouldn't drive on it.

Might be baloney, but I heard that they closed the accesses at Pokegama, Cross Lake, etc.? No driving out on those lakes and maybe somemore in that county (I think the guy said Pine County?)Anyone hear anything about this, or is it another cock and bull story someone made up?

I don't know about Chisago, but Washington andScott have closed lakes to Cars and trucks.

I have been on a few east central lakes recently, I would not drive.

This is not directed to anyone here specifically. If you do choose to drive. Please do not drive within 6 feet of me to ask if I am "gettin em" and then circle me and drive off. This exactly happened Monday. If I thought the ice was safe for a vehicle next to me , I'd have one!!

I am headed out in the am. Good luck if you get out!

Well hopefully thats not the case because I have been driving out there for a couple months now including last weekend and there was a good solid 14" with another 2" of junk on top.I wouldnt think there would have been much damage to the ice this week and I drive a car out not a truck and there have been full size trucks out there for the last 2 months. Anyway if its closed I guess I will be hiking it. Long way from the access to the island though. Oh well a little exercise dont hurt right! If you say lakes aint safe to drive on in that area I wont. I dont like taking risks now that I have little ones. I am not the daredevil I used to be fishing on an inch of ice over 25' of water. shocked.gifGood luck and good fishing!

SKB...It was something I heard from a fishing partner who is friends with a bartender whose folks live on the lake.

I really don't know if it is fact or fiction, just something I heard....might be a good idea to call the bait shop in Pine city, they would know the skinny and dispell any false intel.

Well we hit pokegama saturday morning and the ice still looks good. Measured 15" on sturday so it should be even better now. The accesses were not closed and there was trucks all over the lake. the fishing on the other hand was slow. Managed a couple small crappies lots of small perch 10 nice perch 5 nice sunnies and 3 tips ups 1 there was nothing there the second about a 3 lb northern the third was a good one but got off aftr about 2 minutes of fighting. We were there from 8 til 2. I am sure it was probably better in the evening but had to head home.

Fished Pokegama Last Sunday.

Ice was at 16 to 17 inch.

Drove out the south access, no problem.

Fishing was very good last couple of weeks.

Now it has slowed. Mabey due to cold weather ??

Fishing was also very good on cross lake but has shut off as well.

Going up to visit family at Mille lacs 4th of July weekend. Given the current fishing restrictions and the fact that I don’t have a boat, does anyone know any good shore/kayak fishing lakes in the Mille lacs area?

Spent yesterday afternoon wading the upper croix. Water actually seemed a little low. There was lots of floating grass, so my traditional approach of using a fire tiger jointed rapala was unusable. Tried a whopper plopper for a bit, which avoided floating grass better, but I just didn’t have confidence in using it. So since it seemed like the crayfish outnumbered the rocks, I decided to use a weightless Texas rigged plastic craw. Caught 3 smallies, and a pike.

Here's the actual water level as of Saturday, 6-25. It has dropped some but still is 4 feet above the rule curve. This is updated daily; it's just too early in the day for Sunday's data to be posted. You can check it yourself here: http://www.lwcb.ca/waterflowdata.html

@chaffmj, never mind.  I decided to take a cruise on up there today.  Had a couple popple tops in the driveway but nothing I couldn’t clear.  Nice to see the area again.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?

Drove through Annandale last Tuesday and was really bummed to still only see the old cement slab at Little Jim's. Hope they can get it built-back-better! 🙂

I heard recently the water level had gone down some. Sound like folks are re really dealing with a mess.    Fishing pictures look like a good year in that regard.   Hope the property loss isn't terrible but seems bad.   Bill

Yesterday was a grind to find bigger fish but we landed a few. Only 3 fish overall but they were all nice fish, all C&R. I do believe the sunfish are out of the shallows besides small ones. Thursday I took the nephews out and didn't see any on beds.

Glad you keep coming back, Mark. And glad you still know the way to catch a slew of walleyes. I wish i could’ve learned more while you were here. But I appreciate all the information you provide on what worked for you.  Strange year. We just got part of our dock in and our boat. I fished a couple hours this morning for the first time on a Frazer hump you know and caught ten under 12” and one keeper which I released… a nice 26+“. I’m hoping more to come soon. I hope all is well with you, Dick
