It's time boys. I'll probably head out to the spot this Sat. Have to walk but we can park at Howards Point marina- about a 1/2 mile hike.

Any bay on Tonka has northerns. Concentrate on points and inside turns and be on the weed edge or shallower. I was fishing pannies last Sat and I saw at least 4 different northerns slide through on the Aqua View. Had to actually catch one because it would not leave. Key is to find some areas like I mentioned with green weeds. They will hold panfish which attracts the pike. Use one rod to jig for panfish and set your tipup nearby. I prefer big shiners as bait.

Tim let me know if you are hitting Sarah on Sat. I've been wanting to get out there for awhile. Maybe I'll finally get out there.

Just got back 1am (from tampa). Indeed it was nice when i was talking to u tim but got nasty. Today we got 12-16" of rain. Collapsed roof of bed bath and beyond from all the rain. The roads were flooded and it took me 2 hours to drive 4 blocks. Cars stranded ....finally I opened the door to check the ugly subura forrester rental ground clearance, took a hard left and hopped the concrete median and went back the other way. Class got out early at 2 but my flight was at 9:30 (supposedly). There were a lot of cancelled a delayed flights. Im lucky I got out ooo.gif Anywho we got to get to some norts. Saturday will hopefully be sarah. Im pretty comatose. I would usually be getting up in a couple of hours for fishing. We got to get those wheelers fixed and out so we can go norting with mark.

Mark

come on out to sarah. shoot me an email

b(dot)[email protected] but change the $$ to ss. the forum always chops it out due to the word A$$ in my name. DOHHHHHHHH!

One of my boys banged up my vehicle and I had to deal with getting it back in service Sat. so no fishing for me. Had all my gear in the SUV just in case but the repairs weren't done until 4:30pm. I can only fish Sat AM on Tonka but I from what I have heard the pike are going pretty good. With this cold weather we might even be able to drive some vehicles out. Let me know what you guys want do. Hitting Sarah doesn't sound to bad either. I will be out Friday afternoon on Tonka somewhere.

mark, hopefully your boy wasnt banged up (at least not in the accident:+) I wont be able to make it this weekend. Neighbor rented a 10 hole sleeper on mille lacs and said im going on his dime for helping insulate his garage. Cant turn it down though I never catch squat up there. IF ya got any pointer on that in the twin bay area or something like that emaial it to me if you get a chance. They will be doing more of the drinking thing and sitting at the bar saturday watching nascar. Im taking the portable and might do some exploring.

Ill make it out there yet I hope. Going to red the last weekend of feb.

Moby1,

I see you're from Maple Grove. Do you ever fish on Fish Lake (MG) in the winter?

I think I read a few of your posts about fishing it in the summer for bass and northerns.

I tried it last weekend and was the only guy out there. Caught a bunch of small crappies and sunnies, maybe that's why nobody was out there...

Just wondering if you had any tips.

John

TimL, Mr Special and myself tried it once or twice this year with tip ups early. Tim had fair sucess on tip ups for norts and one nice bass. Me and phil didnt get any If memory serves correctly. Last year was good when we went out. Generally we stuck to the 12' or less near the weedlines either over by the beach or straight out in the section by the boat launch. You may want to consider the hard break thats just off the end of the fishing pier a few feet. As far as crappies....I found them stacked pretty thick in the deep hole about 3/4 of the way down the bay out from the boat launch but I kid you not, they were the smallest crappies i have EVER caught anywhere. I think the biggest was literally about 4". I heard of one really big one being caught and was eyewitnessed by TIML but I imagine a guy can run across one of those in just about any given lake. Tishh08 went out there on saturday for a few hours and two guys never got a single flag. Let me know how you do if you make it out there.

Moby,

There were a couple guys and a bunch of kids out there on Sat. when I was there. Maybe it was Tishh08, we were all fishing in the bay right by the boat launch. I didn't see them land anything, but I thought they got a couple flags...maybe not.

I set some tip ups in about 10' of water in that bay. After about 45 minutes I moved to the break just off the fishing pier. There were a lot of fish on the bottom in about 25' of water. The crappies weren't as small as you're describing, but they were small...probably 6 inches.

I wonder why the pannies are so small? You'd think will all the northerns and bass in there that the size structure would be better.

Do you usually fish shiners under your tipups? I guess you'd have a better chance at a bass that way.

Heading out to Sarah tomorrow morning and wondering if you're still doing ok on the 35' area and if minnows, waxies/maggots or plastics working the best. One other question on timing, understand Moby time but can't make it happen until around 8:00am. Would expect that to still catch at least a bit of prime time but I see you guys tend to leave around 10:30 or head shallow for gills. Has the bite been going longer then 10:30.

Sorry to ask so many questions but time on the ice hasn't been possible and just looking to narrow the scope. Will post results.

Moby1 he's up on the big pond. The fish really just start to come in thick a little later on and the bite can last well past 1030am were usually limited out, minnows always produce way more fish catch a few on waxies heading out the door to Sarah now. The early bird gets the worm.

Thanks Tim, didn't get a chance to check before I went out. Did well on west side of the hole out a bit from the group of guys doing it up right (fishing, eating). Picked up limit @ 9-10". They seem to be a bit thicker then years past. Was 2 to one on gold tear drop. Gold has always done well for me out there in past years. Ratso/grub seemed to bring fish in but no takers. If you were out in same area I was the mule pulling the Frabilll plow back to the ramp at around noon and yes that did suck as bad as it looked.

Thanks for the updates on this post and the Sarah post. I'm a new parent living vicariously through you guys that get out as often as I used to.

Wasn’t quite sure how this week would turn out because of all the reviews but have had a blast and caught some awesome fish. Very weedy in most of the lake canoe out to less weedy area and fished around the weeds caught multiple 4  even heavier bass in a row definitely recommend it

Del, I want to clarify my post regarding the Vermilion Club pizza. First of all, the latest online review for the Vermilion Club was July 4th, 2021. I ate there twice after that review. Both times our group ate pizza and both times the pizza was excellent. I've eaten Poor Gary's pizza for a very long time both when we visited for many years, when we lived on Birch Point, and every time we're there since we left. I could tell a Vermilion Club pizza with a blindfold on. It has a very distinct taste and smell. We absolutely love it. BUT, this time it was different. I even asked our waitress if Poor Gary's pizza had been replaced by new owners. None of our group thought the pizza was even close to what it had been. Now, I'm not knocken the Vermilion Club. I ate there way back in the late 50's when George and Dorothy Tuma owned it. They have always served great food and I have no reason to doubt that their appetizers, sandwiches, etc. are still great. Just understand that pizza and other food is made in 2 different kitchens. I don't know what changed with the pizza kitchen since last September when we were there before this latest trip but something did. I wouldn't hesitate to go back and eat there again. But next time, it'll be on wings night.

Almost every time I go to the VC I comment on how well they do. Consistently good food and good service.

On the south end...  Resorts are adapting to high water conditions.  Despite lots of water, the vast majority of resorts are open, charter boats are running, and summer fishing is in full swing. Most boat ramps are open including Wheeler's Point and others.  Call ahead to your favorite resort or check their Facebook page for specifics. Lots of walleyes being caught in many different locations.  Some fish are in 4-15 feet on sand capitalizing on shiner and minnow spawning.  Others are on shallow rocks eating crayfish.  Others are deeper, 25 - 33', feeding on schools of minnows and various critters coming out of the mud.     Some anglers are still jigging, but drifting with spinners with a crawler or minnow has been super effective this week.  Both methods are working.  Gold, glow, and pink have been good colors this week for jigs and spinners. Trolling crankbaits and covering water has been very effective this past week.  Shiny gold and purple are a couple of good colors.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, smallmouth bass and even an occasional muskie are being caught.   Anglers are allowed a combined limit of 6 walleyes and saugers on the MN side of LOW.  Up to 4 can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0" must be released.  One allowed over 28" per day.   On the Rainy River...   The river still has a lot of current.  Anglers keying in on current breaks as a rule.   A mixed bag in the river right now includes walleyes, saugers, smallmouth bass, and pike.  Sturgeon season reopens July 1st.   Current breaks off of the main channel for walleyes and saugers.  Smallmouth bass near rocky areas, feeder streams and bridge embankments.   Bays have been good for pike.  Lots of big pike and even good walleye reports in bays and feeder rivers to the Rainy River.  Lots of shiners in the river. Up at the NW Angle...  Fishing continues to be very good up at the Angle.  Anglers are fishing both the U.S. side and Ontario side of the lake with good success. Flag Island flats and areas around Garden Island were just a couple of areas good this week.  Lots of walleyes with some mixed in pike.  Fish being caught jigging, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits.   A jig and minnow and pulling crawler harnesses have been good fishing deeper structure as well.  Neck down areas, rocky points and cabbage weeds all holding fish.  There are typically some fish shallow near shore morning and evening with good numbers being caught. A mixed bag for most anglers with walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass, crappies and jumbo perch. Excellent muskie fishing with numbers of fish being caught. Various ways to travel to the Angle. 1.  Drive through Canada to the Angle  (must be vaccinated, no covid test required) 2.  LOW Passenger Service (charter boat service across the lake avoiding customs)  3.  Lake Country Air.(fly from various Midwest locations to LOW and NW Angle) 4.  Take your own boat.  (Safety first, this is a 40 mile ride over big water)

Nope, not there anymore.  Just don’t get up there enough anymore.  Sadly.   Taxes are cheap enough to not really worry about and still have it.     smurf does the pissin’.  I wouldn’t do a thing like that to good furniture. 😉
