Thats too bad and might push some to park on the lake...and then there will be a bigger issue. I can't imagine that there is that much traffic out there to even pay attention to.

What might be some other options out there if ya can't park a long the road?

I hear about this crappie bite out on Pelican every year and am curious about it. Everyone seems to be a guarded as to where to start and what to do. I understand that, I don't really give-up my specific spots on other waters either. But if you could point me in the right direction as to the FOW and techniques that work out there that would be cool. Thanks.

Thanks eyes! That helps. I can usually find fish well by myself, but always appreciate local advice and info. I never expect anyone to reveal the secrets just throw a few ideas my way. Thanks. Good luck to you this season. grin.gif

There is an public access about a mile maybe two up 117 from where people park on the road next to the lake. Its easy to miss. The access on the other side is junk we tried gettin out from there and there was open water every where.

Jiggin, Last year the best bite was out on the north end of the lake... There are a few houses on that side right now that you can actually see from Co. road 37. This year it seems that people are fishing all over the place... There was a group out on the east side of the lake last weekend but haven't heard of the bite over there yet. It has been very spotty for me out there this year but there are some nice sized fish in there but you have got to sort through them. As far as water goes, I usually fish anywhere from 8 to 14 ft. Hope this helps.

I will be headed out there tomorrow. Anyone ever put a tip-up out? If so, any luck on them, or is just mainly a panfish bite?

Thanks,

Josh

jimbo where did you here this spring? my nephew works for DU on these kind of projects and I got the impression from him it was possibly a couple years down the road. I heard all the money had not yet been raised along with all the easments that are needed. Supposedly they need to run the water through some cattail slough type areas to remove some of the phosphorous (sp?) that is in the lake before draining it into the river.

The info I have heard is that they are "moving forward" with drawing the lake down. I have heard nothing about when this is to take place. I imagine its not a simple task to drain this lake to the crow or mississippi.

you guys are both right. i am in the minnesota waterfoweler association and we are going to be helping drain the lake. it is going to take a few years but when all is said and done the lake will average 4 to 8 feet deep which will help out the duck habitat. and add some more habitat for the pheasants also.

I'm in Pheasants Forever and a guy from the DNR was at one of our meetings in the past couple of months. As I recall, they plan to drain the lake down but still have to clear some hurdles with various gov't agencies. As stated earlier, there needs to be an approved plan for draining the lake that will require some county approvals- never a done deal until everyone signs off.

Are you all driving out? I heard there were full size trucks driving out. I want to get out there this week, but don't have a sled or atv.

You still have your trailer and place up there? Maybe you should do some summer rentals of it to help pay the taxes and up keep on it? 👍

The water is starting to slowly go down. From what I can tell it looks like it’s down about 5-6 inches. The wind was terrible over the weekend though. I’m sure many properties suffered damages with Sundays winds. Things are finally starting to head in the right direction but it’s going to take a very long time for things to get back to even somewhat normal.

Stopped at VC last week as well.  Didn't have pizza, but the sandwiches and appetizers we had were good.  The service was very good.  However, that's the first and only time we had been there.

Any other info about VC?   Got kid and and fam coming up.  Been a couple years but really liked it.   Reviews on line still good.   Did Mark just hit on a bad night or has it gone down?   Being on west not a place we go often.

Going up to visit family at Mille lacs 4th of July weekend. Given the current fishing restrictions and the fact that I don’t have a boat, does anyone know any good shore/kayak fishing lakes in the Mille lacs area?

Spent yesterday afternoon wading the upper croix. Water actually seemed a little low. There was lots of floating grass, so my traditional approach of using a fire tiger jointed rapala was unusable. Tried a whopper plopper for a bit, which avoided floating grass better, but I just didn’t have confidence in using it. So since it seemed like the crayfish outnumbered the rocks, I decided to use a weightless Texas rigged plastic craw. Caught 3 smallies, and a pike.

Here's the actual water level as of Saturday, 6-25. It has dropped some but still is 4 feet above the rule curve. This is updated daily; it's just too early in the day for Sunday's data to be posted. You can check it yourself here: http://www.lwcb.ca/waterflowdata.html

@chaffmj, never mind.  I decided to take a cruise on up there today.  Had a couple popple tops in the driveway but nothing I couldn’t clear.  Nice to see the area again.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?
