I'm actually passing up an opportunity to go to Waubay this weekend, but plan to be out Saturday morning trying to get into the crappies that you've been catching trouble.

Have you been using any bait? I've been partial to my Go Devil Spoons from Scenic Tackle tipped with a crappie minnow head just about everywhere I fish, but I just may stop by Gander to get myself a #5 green & black glow rap and a few others for variety.

Fatty - I'm planning to be there Saturday around 6:30am with my Dad, Johnny and Johnny was checking if his Dad was interested. Your welcome to join us. My Dad is going to trailer a four wheeler over to haul our stuff out onto the lake. Give me a call Friday.

It's not my nature to withhold the name of a lake, but I took an oath to get someone else to tell me the name of the lake. You may want to try asking if any other FMers could tell you the name of the lake. Including your email address would be a good idea wink.gif

I sure hope it's worth it tomorrow. The weather forecast has been lowering the amount of wind lately. I was thinking 12 degrees with 20+ mph winds might be a little cold for hole hopping.

I'll probably be connecting two Yukons tomorrow, just because we haven't had an opportunity yet. There will probably be one or two one man houses with us as well.

Well the wind wasn't 20mph but it was blowing hard enough that some one had to sit in the portables all the time so they wouldn't blow across the lake.

The action was not what we hoped for. I drilled a pretty good amount of holes from 10-18 feet, found some nice structure and hole hopped. The I had to carry my ice ladel with me because the holes were freezing over pretty quick.

We ended up with a few crappies, a few perch and a catfish. The fish were looking a lot and biting very little. We tried glow raps, big jigs, little jigs, ratsos, plain minnow, waxies...

This weather doesn't make ice fishing easy.

Maybe next time frown.gif

It looked like I was in a popular spot judging by the number of froze over holes dotting the lake. I was surprised how few people were on the lake. I guess the weather scared off a few of the cold blooded fisherman this morning.

I'm not sure which wipeout you're talking about ice-man. I was running from one house to another and decided to do a little slip and slide becuase the ice was so smooth. That was fun. grin.gif My dad did take a digger once and another guy slid across the ice but I think he was trying the slip and slide that he saw me do. The ice was sure slick. I was the only one with ice cleats too. If it weren't for the four wheeler and trailer to haul everyone across the lake I'm sure there would have been more guys falling that day.

I won't be back there this weekend because I'm heading up the Leech Lake for the Eelpout Festival.

we will leave this lake alone now for the rest of the year, to many anglers to much noise and now tuff to fish. there are some small lakes around here i will destroy tommorow. if you were the one with 3-4 fish traps a wheeeler and what looked like a snowmobile trailer you were on my #3 spot how was it? [email protected] shoot me an e-mail.

We ended up with a couple crappies, a couple perch and a catfish. It was tough to get them to bite and there wasn't that many fish coming through. I don't know the lake very well but would think that the fish were either over deeper water or in the weeds - or somewhere we weren't confused.gif

NOT the deep, at laest not in the 200-300 holes in the deep we drilled. This is usually wear I shine but they haven't been there this year. If you find weeds on the lake let me know. I plan on starting to do some scouting with the camera soon, I think trouble is going to get one in the next couple of days, if not i think he is going to go crazy trying to get me to get one.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
