Duluth Bass League - - - Year 2

Recommended Posts

This is an invitation to anyone in the Duluth and surronding area that wants to share their knowledge or has an intrest in learning some new technics for fishing bass.

Granny and I put this together last year to see if there was any intrest in the area and found it to be a good time for all who took part.

We will be starting our second year, this club is based on stricktly hitting the water and having a great time, there is no money involved, except those who want to enter in a big bass pot for each event. Our teams from last year included a great bunch of guys, I believe we had 5-6 boats on a regular basis and we fished the area lakes around Duluth, Cloquet and moose lake areas. We try and pair people up as boaters and non boaters, all fish are measured and released immediatly back to the water, so no livewells needed. All you need is to have an intrest in bass fishing at any level. The events are held on every third Sunday and there is a points system for bragging rights and medals handed out at our last outing for each place on down the line.

After each event, we meet up for a burger and some talk about what worked and so on. We will post info on our meeting that will be held at Gander Mtn. as we get a little closer to the warm weather, will be sometime in April but will post the exact date as we get closer.

Thanks for any intrest, so bring your tackle and your casting arm have some fun, we look forward to meeting some more good people.

Is this going to be part of the MMSTS this year? Sounds like everyone wants a bass league. I know the MMTS is doing one this year and I thought Granny( Magicstick ) and Mr.twister were in it this year?

No, this is the one we held last year and it is seperate from MMTS.

Granny had told me about the MMTS, we had thought about fishing it, but his schedule has changed.

No, I won't be able to do both bass leagues. The MMTS bass league is during the week and ours is only on weekends. Twister is looking at doing it as a nonboater. He fished out of the back of my boat and now he doesn't want to do any work while fishing grin.gif .

Anyone interested in the bass league can post here or send me an email at LSW2002 at AOL

Hi Granny, We were sure hoping to get you on the water this year in MMTS, but I guess we'll have to get the two groups together some weekend on a lake in between. We have 8-9 teams in already so it should be a great deal. Several others looking too. We really kept the money thing small to get trophies per night for the winning teams. On plaque for each member of the winning team each night and plaques for the top team end of year teams too. Should be a blast. We are only $10 a night or $40 for the year per team. So really an easy deal. It's all about the fishing and learning. I think we have a great group too and I know I have a lot to learn, so that's my goal. Love to see Northlander show us his bass fishing powers.. Glad to see you out here, didn't think with all the fishing you even slept. wink.gif

Doug,

What night are you holding your league event on, and do you keep the same teams all year long?

I'm kinda hoping to do both nights if I can find a partner. I have to admit, fishing in the back was a treat. Everyone should have a Granny in a boat!! Shogun, if your out there, are you coming back?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
