Spring fishing on the north shore

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if there is very good fishing in some of the many streams that head into Superior in the early spring. I was just wondering kind of getting an itch for the north shore with the current warm temps.

Thanks

Scott

I have heard that there are a couple rivers up the shore that might take a rainbow or two come spring wink.gif

I heard through the grapevine that the loopers and steelhead held their annual meeting and they have decided not to run this year, so i defenetly would not make plans to come up here this spring. tongue.gif

Thank you thank you I know how much you all love us from the southern part of the state coming up to your area, but your fishing is better and I thought this would be fun to try this spring seeing as how it is something I have never done.

hehe, sorry about giving you a hard time, but seriously fishing on the north shore can be great but there is a very narrow window of opportunitty. shore fishing for loopers and cohos picks up about mid february and lasts until the middle of april, although people stick it out and catch a few fish into may. If you want to catch steelhead and loopers in the rivers it all depends upon the weather, it looks like with the warm weather we've been having it could be an early run this year. last year the run peaked a lot earlier than we expected and the best fishing was around the second week in april. keep your eyes peeled on this board and you will get a good idea of when the fishing is getting good and keep your eyes on the weather, warm temps and lots of rain equals fish when the run is approaching. I have also been working on a north shore "how to" for steelhead and looper fishing in the rivers when the run comes since it seems like a subject with a ton of interest. Almost every river from duluth to canada receives a run of rainbows and "secret spots" are kept pretty close to home, so if you make a trip up here watch the board, try a few rivers and you will have a great chance at hooking up with some very nice fish.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?

Drove through Annandale last Tuesday and was really bummed to still only see the old cement slab at Little Jim's. Hope they can get it built-back-better! 🙂

I heard recently the water level had gone down some. Sound like folks are re really dealing with a mess.    Fishing pictures look like a good year in that regard.   Hope the property loss isn't terrible but seems bad.   Bill

Yesterday was a grind to find bigger fish but we landed a few. Only 3 fish overall but they were all nice fish, all C&R. I do believe the sunfish are out of the shallows besides small ones. Thursday I took the nephews out and didn't see any on beds.

Glad you keep coming back, Mark. And glad you still know the way to catch a slew of walleyes. I wish i could’ve learned more while you were here. But I appreciate all the information you provide on what worked for you.  Strange year. We just got part of our dock in and our boat. I fished a couple hours this morning for the first time on a Frazer hump you know and caught ten under 12” and one keeper which I released… a nice 26+“. I’m hoping more to come soon. I hope all is well with you, Dick

Maybe the bamboozler will end up being like every fish story, some old timers holding their hands out as wide as possible to demonstrate to a youngster just how big it was....
