Prior bite

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been out on Prior lately? How's the bite? A few weeks ago we were slamming panfish in Lower but I've heard that its slowed down. Any luck with the 'eyes?

haven't been out for two weeks, was slamming them in lower too.......I have only seen one eye on that lake and that was because the camera caught, not me.............hopefully I can get tomorrow night, but with this weather, I will probably stay home til we get more cold air.........

Went out on Lower last night and the sunnies were real aggressive. They were suspended pretty high and had nice size to 'em. They kept biting until I picked up stakes around 8:00 or so. What looked to be a Monte Carlo came smokin' out of sportsman's and cruised (40-50mph) towards Sandy Point then headed southwest I believe, clear across the lake. Deathwish.

I think the DNR needs to add a zero or two to the ticket that they issue for people who drop their cars into 8 inches of soft ice.......good to hear that the sunnies are still banging stuff out there..........

You think that's crazy, I was out on O'Dowde and there were 4 or 5 fullsize trucks with 4 or 5 big houses in about a 100x100 yard area! Plus big yukons and crew cab trucks driving all over the lake. You should hear the ice sing when the drive by.

Insane . . . .I would reluctantly walk of the ice now after yesterday and today.

Inevitably . . . . another truck, house or both will fall in.

O'Dowd should be fine to drive on.. Last weekend there was 12 + inches everywhere I checked. I would not worry about unless we have a week of 40 degree days.

I saw our "friend" in the brown monte carlo get pulled over by the sheriff at the sportsman access on Friday afternoon. He was flying across the lake and onto shore and up the access to the upper parking lot while the sheriff was down on the sand. Quite humorous. I pulled the permanent off yesterday too due to the lake on top of the lake. Sad, really. Good Luck! McGurk

I was out there early today and the bite was pretty tough. I fished straight out on the point in 17-20 feet and never marked a fish. Moved up to the outside of the the island in 15-25 feet and never marked a fish. Finally moved further north into the sea of permanents and at least picked up a few sunnies. I was hoping walleyes would make a showing but no dice. Anything happening on Spring?

Walleyeking - might need to re-think that about the week of 40 degree weather. I thought the same thing, but I fell through today walking next to my perm. when I was jacking it up to move it. The only thing that saved me from going under was the fact that I was still hanging on to the winch on my house. In general the ice should be OK, but its getting spotty really quick. We are definitely not making any more ice right now.

If you are any kind of fisherman, you should be able to hole hop around the area north of the island or up on the east end and have no problem catching 20 nice bluegills. They are all over the place out there. Stay mobile and you will end up with a pile of fish. I kept 20 nice ones Sat. morning.

Fished hard yesterday...started the day by losing a crappie at the hole...nice...and could only manage one nice sunny, on prior that is.

Left prior and fished another area lake from noon to 8PM...

Hot Crappie bite and one that came up out of the hole at

15.5 inches!!! Those things are so tough to get out of the hole...what a challenge and what an extraordinary fish. Caught it right as the action started to slow and after a couple of guys left confused.gif Used the Glow Optics Nucleus...from that of which have claimed its THIRD 15 inch victim. These jigs work guys...glow optics!!!!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
