Where is WALDO?

Walleyes were slow for us this summer...that trend is continuing for us this winter...a few small ones here and there, but absolutely no rhyme or reason to it all. Any suggestions on lakes to try...or depths?

Hit the Mississippi. They are hard to find, but once you do, they are on an exact pattern. We find they bit in 8-10 FOW between 4:45-5:10, and only then, never has failed yet this year for us. Its like turning on a light switch at 4:45 and turning it off at roughly 5:10. We have been using buckshot rattle spoons (green glow) tipped with a minnow head.

Where on the river is there enough ice to be fishing? I know when the weather is normal we ice fish right below the university brigedam I have thought about using regular gear to fish down there this year.

anywhere from the Sartell da_m to the rice bridge is fishable. Find an area with minimal current and go from there. Watch out for thin ice along some of the shores as well as near Gordon's bridge or near the Rice bridge. Something different to try if you're having no luck on area lakes.

Saw a few guys launching their boat today in SR-- said they had had some luck last week below the St. Cloud da_m.

If you want to fish there your definatly going to need a boat this year. When it gets really cold there can be some fishable ice below the dam. As for above the dam i would be very carful with the warm weather ice can be marginal on a good year.

If you are talking above the dam in St.Cloud, I would ADVISE not to venture out on the ice. There is ice, but there is a very good current - viewable current- from where the ice has broken away and stays open.

Has anyone tried shore fishing below the SCSU dam lately? I really should try it, I can't buy an eye on the ice. I caught a million 12" eyes down there this summer, maybe they're 12.5" now! HAHA!!

You can still fish Mille Lacs during the closure from July 1-15.  You just can't specifically target a walleye or use live bait.  There's plenty of smallmouth bass and pike in the lake that you can target with artificial lures and you might get lucky with a muskie.   The wind can be an issue out there though.  If that doesn't sound appealing to you, try the Rum River.  There is an access in Kathio State Park that would work well for a kayak.  You could go upstream and downstream from there too.   I think you will need to purchase a daily pass to use that access in the park (it might be like 5 bucks).  I haven't fished there in years but I fish the Rum River further downstream every season and the fishing in there is fantastic during midsummer.

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. Glad your place was ok. Lake Country power said they had 20 poles toppled in one area!

You still have your trailer and place up there? Maybe you should do some summer rentals of it to help pay the taxes and up keep on it? 👍

The water is starting to slowly go down. From what I can tell it looks like it’s down about 5-6 inches. The wind was terrible over the weekend though. I’m sure many properties suffered damages with Sundays winds. Things are finally starting to head in the right direction but it’s going to take a very long time for things to get back to even somewhat normal.

Stopped at VC last week as well.  Didn't have pizza, but the sandwiches and appetizers we had were good.  The service was very good.  However, that's the first and only time we had been there.

Any other info about VC?   Got kid and and fam coming up.  Been a couple years but really liked it.   Reviews on line still good.   Did Mark just hit on a bad night or has it gone down?   Being on west not a place we go often.

Going up to visit family at Mille lacs 4th of July weekend. Given the current fishing restrictions and the fact that I don’t have a boat, does anyone know any good shore/kayak fishing lakes in the Mille lacs area?

Spent yesterday afternoon wading the upper croix. Water actually seemed a little low. There was lots of floating grass, so my traditional approach of using a fire tiger jointed rapala was unusable. Tried a whopper plopper for a bit, which avoided floating grass better, but I just didn’t have confidence in using it. So since it seemed like the crayfish outnumbered the rocks, I decided to use a weightless Texas rigged plastic craw. Caught 3 smallies, and a pike.

Here's the actual water level as of Saturday, 6-25. It has dropped some but still is 4 feet above the rule curve. This is updated daily; it's just too early in the day for Sunday's data to be posted. You can check it yourself here: http://www.lwcb.ca/waterflowdata.html

@chaffmj, never mind.  I decided to take a cruise on up there today.  Had a couple popple tops in the driveway but nothing I couldn’t clear.  Nice to see the area again.
