RED LAKE BAND MEETING

Recommended Posts

Hey Jaypo, just to answer you question regarding the quality of fishing on Lower Red Lake. I've been out fishing near the Little Rock Creek area and I have been catching squat! I don't know where the heck the fish went to. It's usually excellant fishing around that area for perch and northern pike.

For crappies, the only place I've caught them during the winter is near the Blackduck River area on the east side of Lower Red Lake.

Let me know if you would like more info regarding Lower Red Lake.

Here’s a brief "Kennewick Man" intro. Plenty more on Google if you are interested.

I’m thinking that surely he never-ever fished URL or LRL. I get the reference but PLEASE let’s keep this Friendly and Local.

“An ancient man's bones of contention “

Brad Knickerbocker, Special correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor

“He was a sturdy man of middle years who may have looked a bit like British actor Patrick Stewart of "Star Trek" fame, about 5-feet, 9-inches tall, and living in a dangerous world. The three-inch spear point, buried in his hip when he was a teenager and carried for the next 30 years or so, attests to his toughness. But given the detailed attention with which he was buried along the banks of the Columbia River more than 9,000 years ago, he likely had a family and community that cared for him as well. "Kennewick Man," named for the town in eastern Washington near where he was found, continues to fascinate scientists as he gradually reveals more about himself. And as he does so, he tells us more about the first Americans - where they came from, how they got to the continent, and the kind of lives they lived. The latest scientific data show that the man found by college students who were hiking along the Columbia River in 1996 is neither European nor related to present-day native Americans. Instead, according to a report released last week by the US Department of the Interior, Kennewick Man shares strong physical affinities with populations in Polynesia as well as with the Ainu people, an isolated Caucasoid group that lives in northern Japan.”

How deep is Lower Red? How deep is it where you usually fish for perch? Do you have a Vexilar, or other fish finder?

How many crappies does everyone think would be in red if the tribes could have gotten money for them?? I am guessing not many, they would have been netted just like the eyes.

If you were a little more familiar with the Red Lakes and the situation you would know that crappies can very seldom be caught in a gill net. Too blunt and do not have the sharp point on their gills. To them a gill net is just a fence to go around. That is one of the reasons the DNR has a difficult time getting a good count on the numbers out there. The DNR tests with gill nets.

Yea maybe thier walleye gills, but are you trying to tell me that they can't buy or make a net, NOT neccessarly a gill net, but put nets out that would get crappies caught up in??? You should be glad they didn't kelly, if that had been the case these last few years of the crappie boom would have been even tougher for you and everyone else up there making a living off the lake.

It is my understanding that the Red Lake Band considered using Hoop nets but decided not to as it could have harmed the walleye recovery. Perhaps the Band Members that have been posting can clarify that. The result was that sportsman took untold numbers of crappies out while the Red Lake Band took very few out.

It seems to me that the most of the people living on the shores of the Red Lakes are happy with the recovery and the aggreements between the DNR and the Red Lake Band. In fact I am &@## proud of the fact that the DNR and the Red Lake Band were able to work hard together and bring the walleyes back. They both deserve our applause not our critisism. The conflict between the Band and sportfishing was not a new one but one those of us living here have dealt with for generations. Now when we are finally working together for what is best for the Red Lakes we have people living 100's of miles away throwing bombs trying to derail the entire proccess. I have never felt so optimistic about the future of the Red Lakes. This is my home, Upper Red Lake is the only lake I every fish and I am happy for it's future. cool.gif I'm sorry you cann't feel the same.

I believe the deepest water is 30 feet located near the town of (Contact US Regarding This Word). Where I fish the water depth is 10 feet a half a mile out to about 22 feet two miles out. As far as using Vexilar or a fish finder, I have neither; I am a poor native american and cannot afford those fancy gadgets.

Black Max:

About your question "How many crappies does everyone think would be in red if the tribes could have gotten money for them??"

In the summer of 1990, the Red Lake Fisheries were paying $0.55 per pound for perch. Crappies were being paid the same. Walleyes were paying $0.30 per pound. Sheepshead were paying $0.02 per pound. Of course, these prices fluctuated depending on the market, usually downward.

I never set a commercial net but I did help a cousin with two nets once. He set the nets to get fish for his family. In the nets were 12 walleye, a couple perch, and about 30 sheepshead.

During that summer I sent in thirty five crappies to Fisheries but they were caught with a cheap Zebco 404. And those crappies were big; at least 1 lb each. I think I made $11 on those fish.

Thanks kelly p you answered question before i did. I dont think you could make a living netting crappies. Heads smaller than body I think they just back right out of nett when caught. So you cant blame natives for crappie decline Black max.

Treaties didnt make casinos possible Indian gaming act did.You really should check on some of these things before you make it a topic of your anger.

This is a fishing website but i'll answer you question on state run casino's anyway .I would be against if it would be the same plan our current governor had.I also think it will never happen. Why do you think it fizzeled out this govenors not some bleeding heart liberal is he.

Why do you think he tried to get natives on board for it. Cause he has no legal right to open a casino. He didnt want to just cut the indians in out of the kindness of his heart. He need us to make it work. But tribes started to back out after the govoner started wanting control over our share of the profits.Oh by the way we would have had to contribute money for construction of project.

Also never read a goegraphy book but did read a geography book when I was in college. You do know most of the stuff in them is just theories right they cant be proven.I should ask if you know what theories are first.Wait you make up your own on almost every post. smile.gif

Ha-ha, dynamite, are u serious Black?

I've heard alot of crazt...stuff...but never that one, what pissed u off about the Natives, may I ask?

What is the deal, remember your government sets your rules, not us, the Feds gave us the right to run gambling, we didnt do it on our own.

Get a job...wow you are really hurt, maybe need some counseling to find out why you carry all this anger towards these people for all these years.

I agree that if you want to prosper, get a plan, but fishig isnt the only way we can make money, some of us have moved on to other things, why not u?

And if you cant respect their rights as Native Americans then dont fish on Red Lake. "Evil Whitey" gave them that land and it is theirs, be happy with the portion that you can fish. Respect runs both ways.

I never whinned to you for money and if I did then sorry. Dont know you and never disrespected your rights as an american. If you could show me where i did please do cause I have no ideal what you are talking about.

Also the goverment didnt give us this land. This land was already ours before there even was a goverment. The goverment only confirmed it with these treaties. The goverment let us leave them reservations to help out in wars. Starting in ww1.I also do think our paticular tribes was ever confined to them.

As far as me being a bully I'm just replying to your factless post's seems to me your looking for someone to gang up on me and your mad cause you got no takers. I dont even know these other people on here. But seems like they want to find out facts before jumpimg to conclusions.Something you should really look into and consider.

It also Sounds to me like you dont have a problem with natives at all your gripes with the goverment for making these bad deals. We natives you know were always trying to bamboozal someone. smile.gifSeems like your the one not respecting american goverment by not respectng laws.

I have to ask again but first I have to stop laughing. What kind of things got us poor natives sent the reservation? I dont think its in your power to have me sent to the reservation anyways. But if you did that aint so bad lots of fish there. laugh.gif

Why can't you respect the fact that the lake belongs to the Red Lake Nation? This is just a case of someone having something you can't have. It's no different that land owners who post thier land as no hunting. Respect their right that they do not want people to hunt on their land. And don't even go into the water is owned by the state thing. Treaties were signed and Red Lake belongs to the Red Lake Nation. Are you an only child? grin.gif

To all of the native am. attacking me.

Sorry but I do not see anyone attacking you and I'm not Native American. German and Bohunk so there. cool.gif

This is starting to remind me of a little tale I heard attributed to Ruydard Kipling. He was at a zoo in New Delhi and over the heads of the crowd he saw a sign that said, "Warning this animal is vicious". He worked his way through the crowd to that cage and saw a 3 Toed Sloth??? That is one of nature slowest and most peacefull animals???? He thought that there must be a mistake but he looked up and it did say "Warning this animal is vicious", but below that in small letters the sign also said, "When attacked it will defend itself". I only see people defending themselves .

Nobody is ganging up on you that I can see. We are just stating our views just as you are. Somehow I do not see how casinos and treatys belong in a Topic about the Red Lakes and walleyes.

10 years ago if someone would have told me that I would be taking the same side as Red Lake Band members that were not from Ponemah I would I would have asked them what they were smoking. But here I am.

You think you have issues with Native Americans once when Rudy was pitching for the Ponemah Point team he struck me out!!! In slow pitch softball!!! blush.gif Then he stood there on the mound laughing at me. Dave was on third and he was laughing so hard he couldn't even stand up. The humiliation, the horror, the never ending nightmares of my bat cutting through the air to strike NOTHING. frown.gif But I got over it in time. You will too smile.gif

With that said and seeing as we are done putting the wallpaper up I'm heading for the lake. You all play nice now boys and girls or Rick will take our toys away and make us all go to our rooms to take a "time out".

You mean to tell me you never heard of the goverment helping another. Happens all the time maybe you dont watch news.Like bosnia goverment helped them out with money and troops. I know I was there on peace keeping mission.

Your disrespect for laws is your disrespect for the treaties that the US goverment made with us.Thats what i was saying. And treaties is the reason why the rest of this land is not ours.Treaties we signed and have to live with just like you.

The Red Lake Band is unique because they were never conquered and when they did aggree to a reservation they didn't allot it to individuals so it couldn't be parcelled off like White Earth. The reservation has a lot of social problems but they are fiercely possessive of their homeland and not going to do anything that compromises their status as a separate nation. It's a situation that is radically different than Mille Lacs. I think that the Red Lake band plans to remain apart and hope they outlast the white devils. If it wasn't for the walleyes nobody would be much interested in that piece of real estate.

Ok we are all going fishing together.

I will load all you guys in my boat, I have room for six. I have the technology and with the proper permission from the Red Lake Nation I’ll put the starboard side on reservation water and the port on the open side and we will talk about what side is doing better but every time somebody slings mud or gets disrespectful there going to get slapped in the back of the head with an eight foot musky rod by the captain. I have heard enough. It will be like the time I took the boy scouts out, everybody was mad with the other one until they looked around and realized they are all in the same boat and if they all wanted to catch fish they better start making friends, working together and finding solutions to the differences, or nobody gets fish with all the ruckus going on.

Funny thing is those boys figured out they were getting nowhere in roughly five minutes.

Enough with the name calling.

That's a good article- I've read it before.

Black max, YOU seem to be the only one here right now showing disrepect. Everyone else seems to be acting like an adult, all I see coming out of your keyboard is insults. Grow up a little, bring up some kind of positive contribution and MAYBE this will all lead somewhere.

If you are stuck in the past, then YOU my friend will never get it.

Try doing a little reading on the original treaties & the history of the reservation, and maybe your eyes will be opened a little.

Th Red Lake Indian reservation DID do domething for our government many years ago. They ran logging operations from the reservation to help build all of the houses for the original settlers. They ran a fishery for the government to supply people food when there were shortages. Sure they got paid, whatever it was the goverment decided was "fair".

They have also help to keep a lake as beautiful as nature intended it to be. I think if it were up to you, it would be more like Mille Lacs lake....resorts everywhere, you getting to fish anywhwere you like, along with the 50000 other people. I personnally LOVE the small town of Waskish & the way they work together to help each other. My mom was born & raised there, and it's my favorite place on earth to this day.

Why don't you look at what some Americans have done with some of our most treasured natural resources before you start critisizing what Native Americans have done with a place you only want to visit, and catch more fish from?

Please try & help, and leave out all the insults & innuendos.

Yes we all want the same thing...talking about the future of the Red Lakes as a fishery. It is a interesting topic. Just to see a body of water go through the changes that Red lake did spins my head in a circle, I'm sure it left a few of those lab guys scracthing their heads also.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
